I couldn't sleep. I tossed and turned as my long amber hair lay in an array around my neck and shoulders. I sighed and sat up out of bed. I had found out that Sister Catherine smokes cigarettes the other day, but she made me promise to not say anything to Father Duffy. I bribed her for three cigarettes in return I wouldn't mention her smoking to another soul. Even nuns sin, huh? I opened my drawer and took a cigarette out. I climbed out of my window and onto the roof. It was April so it had begun getting slightly warmer. There was a light rain tapping on the roof tops. I realized I didn't have a lighter and huffed. I looked over to the boys' home and saw that there was a boy about my age smoking as well. oh what the hell.. "Hey! Pstttt.... you got a light?" I quietly called over to him. "Yeah! come on over!" I smiled and made my way across the roofs. I finally sat down beside him. I put the cigarette between my chapped pink lips as he took his zippo lighter out and lit it for me. I inhaled and thanked him on the exhale. "Yeah no problem." he spoke with a voice like silk. He was tall and had olive skin. He had beautiful hazel eyes just like mine and chestnut brown hair. "You in the girls home?" he asked breaking my thoughts into a fragment. "nah.. i just chill on the rooftops at 3 am for fun" I grinned sarcastically. he laughed lightly "fair enough" he said. He held his hand out to me "Sam Morgan". I smiled and shook his hand back "Skylar Black... but my friends call me Sky". He smiled crookedly "cool name" he said. I smiled and we both smoked and chatted for a while.

"You have any siblings?" he asked after we shared more about ourselves. "Nope. just me. What about you?" He nodded "Yeah, I've got a younger brother, Nathan". He continued to tell me about Nathan and their pranks on Father Duffy as well as Sister Catherine. I listened intently to everything he said. I was sort of a loner at the orphanage, so it was nice to talk to someone my age again. We cracked jokes about other kids here that we didn't like, and we talked for a long while thereafter. "Well, I should probably head to bed. Hopefully we'll catch up again soon" I smiled at him. "You can count on it, Sky" he smiled crookedly once again. I climbed over the roofs back into my room and smiled waving at Sam from window.

That was the first night that I had met Samuel Morgan. My life had changed for the better in the orphanage. I would find little notes under my pillow from Sam sometimes which always made me smile. He took care of me. He would slide me extra food to make sure I ate. He would give me a few cigarettes and he would even leave some of his favorite books for me to read about pirates, Sir Francis Drake, and many other explorers that he looked up to. The next year at the orphanage was one of the best years of my life. Sneaking around with Sam and Nate became a routine as if it were our jobs. I had always felt differently about Sam, but he was my only friend so the last thing I wanted to do was ruin that. Nathan and I became great friends and allies against the orphanage bullies. The three of us were invincible.
