The sound of an alarm was what woke Rose up. She opened her eyes and looked at the clock. It read 7:00am. She got out from under the covers and walked to her closet. She got dressed in a blue sweater and dark blue jeans. After that, she went downstairs to breakfast and made some toast. She finished it quickly and then started her walk to school. She met up with her two best friends Nadine and Krista.
Rose met Krista in first grade. She was a shy introverted child. One day Krista came up to Rose asking if she would help save the caterpillars from the boys at recess. Especially from Nick Mossman. He was always trying to be the cool kid in school.
After that Krista and Rose spent everyday at school together. They were attached at the hip. The next year they met Nadine. Krista asked Nadine politely to move so she could give the caterpillar they found earlier some water. Rose was slowly tagging along behind her. Kirsta gave Rose the caterpillar to hold while she introduced herself to Nadine.
"You wanna hold him?" Rose asked Nadine shyly. "But don't squash him," Krista added.
Nadine took him in her tiny hands and greeted him. Rose smiled at the sight of someone else being kind to the little caterpillar. Krista told her she could be his other mom with us. Nadine seemed shocked she asked that and agreed. Rose was happy the caterpillar would have three great mom's. They would take turns caring for him in classes, but....Nadine accidentally suffocated him in her pencil box two hours later. They had a small funeral for him in the girls bathroom. The three girls silently stared in the toilet as it got flushed. The caterpillar was in a better place now Rose told herself.
After that Nadine, Krista and Rose were always hanging out. They told each other things they never thought they would say out loud. The girls would spend almost every weekend at each other's houses laughing and having sleepovers.
It turned out Nadine and Kristas life wasn't perfect either. When they would play with toys and have tea parties the girls could hear Krista's parents fighting. But Rose and Nadine got Krista through it. For the next few years everything was magic for the trio.
