1. Parting Words

Katniss' P.O.V.

I watched as Caleb walked down the steps and onto the stage he picks up the knife and cuts himself. I hear Prim gasp and both me and Beatrice grab her hands. We're like the most protective big sisters there are. Me and Caleb are twins but he's more like a parent to us girls even though he's only older by 3 minutes. Tomorrow, Tris will be the oldest. We watch as Caleb drops his blood into the Erudite bowl. What?! I feel Prim let go of my hand as they call my name. 

"I love you," I tell my little sisters, and walk down the steps to the stage. As I cut my hand as watch the blood drop into the abnegation bowl, I hear Marcus call out "Dauntless!". "What?" I ask and he points to a stray drop that landed in the dauntless bowl. I look at my sisters with horror on my face which they reflected. They were both crying, no!

We run to the train tracks and climb the railing, I am still crying as I jump with ease onto the train. One of my secret pass times is going hunting in the woods outside the wall for the Amity, it's like secret community service, was. We're on the train for 30 minutes and I sit next to another abnegation that I recognise as Tobias Eaton. "Hello, Katniss Prior isn't it?" He asks, I can only nod. "Hey, look we've got two stiffs this year. I'm Zeke, who are you?" A tall boy asks as he sits next to us. "This is Katniss, just call me stiff." Tobias says, looking at Zeke and avoiding looking out the window. "So you're the one who chose dauntless by mistake." He says, I nod again. Somebody yells that we're here so we stand up and move to the door. 

"They're jumping!" I yell over the wind. We near the building and I jump, I feel Tobias and Zeke land beside me and I get up. We walk to one side if the building and a guy named Max gives a speech that I don't listen to. Zeke jumps first, I watch an Erudite jump second then a dauntless born jump 3rd. Then the most unexpected thing happened, Tobias walked over to the edge and jumps, I choose to follow him. When I get to the bottom I see Tobias and Zeke and the other initiates, someone tips the net and I climb out. I walk over to them with my eyes wide and a smile on my face. 

"Out of all the mistakes you could have made, this one isn't to bad." Zeke says, I hit him playfully on the arm. "With you here it might have been." I retort, he pouts. "Ha! that's what you get!" Tobias tells him. "Whatever..." Zeke trails off as the next person hits the net. It's a blond erudite boy, he's cute. Once everyone has jumped, we say good bye to Zeke and get the tour. We end up in the dormitory and end the tour, well that wasn't too bad. I am changing into my dauntless clothes when I find the one photo of my siblings I have. My fingers trace the faces. Prim is probably 8ish in this one, Tris would've been 10, Caleb and I would have been 12. Prim is on my back, Caleb is smiling and doing a peace sign with his fingers and Tris is sticking her tongue out, winking and puting her hands in the air. Are parents aren't there of course. 

Tris P.O.V.

I catch the bus home with my family, or what's left of it. Prim and I go up to our shared room on the second floor and crash without even having dinner. We decided we're not going to touch Katniss and Caleb's room but rather share our own. I know that our parents think it's their fault but I know that they'll get over it and start blaming them for their actions. The next day we have school, Prim is staring at my school next year so I know I'll need to protect her, as much as possible for an abnegation anyway. She's curious about the whole thing, and she knows I'll be there for her. 

Prim is very smart for her age, she's so small for a twelve year old that people think she's a lot younger. She knows she might never see one or both of our siblings again. She knows Caleb wanting to leave us and Katniss didn't, she knows Marcus Eaton's son also chose dauntless. I'm only 2 years older than her but she is probably just as smart as me. My parents were perfectly timed in giving birth; first my older siblings, two years later I'm born, two year after that Prim is born, we're the biggest family in abnegation. Or... we were, now we're just the norm, two kids, two parents, why is the world built in twos, I don't get it.

Anyway, now there's a big burden on me, I can't go when I turn 16. If I do then I leave Prim alone, I can't do that. If I leave then it could also be bad for my parents, 3 kids escaping  yeah, that wouldn't look good. And imagine if Prim leaves too, we both got blocked. It won't be as bad if she leaves but I can't stay or the news could start targeting me. On the other hand if I go and Prim decides to stay she would be spared of the erudite rumors, she would be the golden child. But if I stay she's forced to as well. So it's decided in two years, I will go.

Prim looks like a younger version of me, at least that's what mum says, She says that she used to look like us with our grey eyes and blond hair and petite figures, unlike Katniss and Caleb who always had brown eyes and brown hair and were pretty tall and well built. I know Katniss will try her hardest in Dauntless because if she becomes factionless then she will have to face us in the streets, knowing she's a failure, she can't do that. I know, as much as I don't want to, that Caleb chose erudite for a reason. And I hope he likes it there.

**flashback**

"Beatrice! Primrose! Come here!" Katniss yelled. I grab Prim's hand and we run down the stairs to the twins in the living room, our parents are still out working. "What?" 8-year-old Prim asks, we sit in a circle. "We have to promise, that even when we turn 16 and we get to chose where we go. That we'll always look out for each other." Caleb says. "Of course, always." I say, Prim nods. We put our hands in the middle. "Prior on 3... 1, 2, 3, Prior!" We all yell.

 Katniss takes a tiny camera out of her pocket, she rests it on the shelf. We all stand up and make silly faces, Katniss hits a button and runs over to us then just before the camera flashes Prim jumps on Katniss' back. the photo prints and we all look at it. We look amazing, "Where did you get that camera, Katniss?" I ask. "She traded it for her lunch today with Zeke. Don't worry we shared." Caleb says. 

Katniss and Caleb were in the big school so we didn't see them every day, but I'm in the same school as Prim so we can hang out. I can't wait to be in big school, Caleb has a girlfriend, Katniss talks to the dauntless and does community service in amity. Sounds like a dream.

** end of flashback**
