It was a nice Saturday evening in the human realm, the sunset on the horizon a mix of blood orange, faded pink, and deep purple that bled into a darkening blue. There was the sound of jingling keys, and the front door to Luz's mother's house opened. Luz and Amity entered, laughing. They each had a shopping bag in one hand, both from different clothing stores.
"You didn't have to scare the dude like that, Ami." Luz said, smiling at her girlfriend.
"I just taught him a little lesson. I'm sure he can find another shirt like that and be more mindful if he doesn't want it set on fire next time." Amity said pointedly as she shut the door behind them. She shrugged nonchalantly and crossed her arms. "He shouldn't of called himself trying to flirt with my Luz."
"Oh, your Luz?" Luz said, quirking an eyebrow and putting on a smirk.
"I said what I said." Amity said. The tone in her voice left no room for argument, not that there was gonna be one.
Luz chuckled and nodded her head towards the back of the house, raising the bag in her hand. "Come on, let's go start getting ready before they get back from grocery shopping." she said. She started heading out of the room towards the kitchen with Amity trailing behind.
The crossed through the kitchen to the hallway leading to the stairs, bringing them upstairs and to Luz's room there. Luz opened the door to her room and tossed her bag towards her bed, doing a small side fist-pump when it landed square in the middle. "Nice." she said. She went to her bed and sat down off to the side of the bag, lifting her foot to start untying her shoes as Amity entered a second later and set her own bag by the door. "I can't wait to see the dress you got." she said eagerly. "And most importantly, what you look like in it."
Amity smiled. "I think you'll like it." she said. She went over to Luz's closet and opened it up. "And hopefully everyone else, too."
"You're acting like this is the first time we've had dinner at my mom's with everybody." Luz kicked off her other shoe once the laces were undone and went for her socks next.
"I know, I know, but I still worry about making a good impression, you know?" Amity said truthfully. She was rummaging around in Luz's closet at this point. "Kind of a side effect of growing up with my mother. Every dinner, every event, was an obligation to be perfect."
"Please, Ami. You're basically a fourth child to my mom." Luz said. She leaned over, trying to see over Amity's shoulder into the closet. "What are you looking for?"
"Your flat-iron." Amity said.
"Oh, there's a box in the bottom right corner. Look in there." Luz directed with a point, even though Amity couldn't see her do so.
Amity stooped down and leaned further into the closet, spotting the box Luz had mentioned and reaching for it to pull it out. She opened it up and, sure enough, there was Luz's flat-iron right on top of the other contents. She took it out, returned the box to it's spot, and stood up to shut the closet back. "Thanks." she said. She retreated back to he bedroom door and picked up her bag, tucking the flat-iron inside.
"Wait, where are you going?" Luz asked.
"What, you thought I was gonna change here in front of you?" Amity said, looking at her over her shoulder and with a playful smile at that. "It's much more fun if I keep you waiting, is it not? Plus, I'll get a nice surprise when I come back to see you in your outfit."
"Hm.. I like the way you think, Blight." Luz said.
"Knew you'd see it my way." Amity said. She took hold of the doorknob and closed the door behind her, heading to the bathroom up the hall.
