Luna's POV

A part of me felt like it had died last night. I had become completely unhinged at the thought of losing Benji. My first child. The one that saved me, more than I had saved him. I loved him from the first moment I had found him under the soot and ash of his family's cabin. He was my little phoenix, rising from the embers of the life that he once had. My cub, who had survived all that time alone in the jungle. He was a fighter and hearing that he had possibly been taken or worse, it pushed me over the edge of what little sanity I had left.

He sat across from me now, taking deep steady breaths. His back rested against Bruno's chest as he stroked his hair from his face. I was too afraid to take my eyes off of him, too worried of what might happen but at some point in the early hours of the morning I had fallen asleep. When I woke to the sun hitting my eyes, his perfect face laid there, curled up in Bruno's arms. He had shifted back while I slept.

"Mamá, I'm fine. Stop scowling at me. I told you, I wouldn't have shifted back if I wasn't better. I promise.", Benji tried to appease me. It was hard to be mad at him for anything right now but I couldn't help but worry. I was worrying over everything and if I thought too hard about the events and the state of which Bruno had brought Benji home, I spiraled and had to be calmed back down by Bruno or Maria.

"You're still scowling...", he scrunched up his face at me, trying to make light of the moment.

"And I'm gonna keep scowling, til the end of time. For all eternity. This face is going to look like this now. Get used to it.", I didn't want him to think I was upset at him. It was everything else, not my Beno, that stressed me out. He chuckled nonetheless at my slight joke.

"Ready?", Lo's voice called from behind us on the mattress. I sighed, watching Bruno give Benji a gentle squeeze in his arms. He whispered something to Benji that I couldn't make out but it made Benji smile. "Don't get all emotional now, pá.", Benji's tone was playful, almost mocking him. It made Bruno chuckle. Since when did these two have inside jokes? And when did he start calling him pá? My puzzled face looked at my two boys who had bonded over something. It warmed my heart. Bruno shifted under Benji, letting him go and stood to join Lo. He had been going out on perimeter checks every few hours, along with the rest of the teams. Always returning after an hour or two to see how Benji was doing. He looked exhausted and I felt horrible for not being able to help them but Benji needed me more.

'He' would feel my wrath later and his army. I clenched my fist.

Brun's face smiled at us just as he disappeared out the door. Last night had changed him and his confidence in his gift. He had unlocked a new part of himself, one that we taught during training. How to tap into the potential of your magic. It normally takes a great deal of practice to discover but he had found it on his own, within himself. I was so proud of him when he phased right out of our home into the jungle and back again with Benji. It's extremely draining for a beginner to phase with someone else but he either didn't let it show or he was running on pure adrenaline.

"Hey Luna?", the sound of Arthuro knocking on the open backdoor echoed in the house. "Can I come in?". He peaked over at us with his usual shy smile. "Sure. But no 'work' talk.", I shot him a serious look, eyeing him. He seemed nervous but then again, he always seemed nervous. For such a handsome young man he wasn't the most confident but he was a sweetheart and Benji's best friend. "Promise..", he held up his hand over his heart as if taking an oath.

"If you're staying for a bit, mind if I hop in the bathroom real quick?", I needed a bath to wash away the feeling of sorrow and hurt from my skin. Maybe I'll feel a little more refreshed then.

"Sure.. Take your time. I'm not going anywhere.", he smiled at Benji.

The warm water soothed my aching soul and when I came back out the two of them were still sat on the mattress, their backs leaning against the sofa. "Feel better?", Benji teased.
