(Narrator)
In a world where magic is everything, one orphan boy was born without it. That boy's name is Asta, and his wish was to have the power to protect the people around him. The country he was born in was known as the Clover Kingdom, where people with low mana, which are common folks, are discriminated against by those with high mana, which are royals and nobles. The people who protect the country are known as Magic Knights, led by the strongest mage in the kingdom, the Wizard King, his position is second only to the ruler of Clover Kingdom.
Asta was found, as a baby, on the doorstep of a small village church in the Forsaken realm of the Clover Kingdom, along with his foster brother, Yuno. Yuno was born with enough mana to rival the royals of clover. Because of this, Yuno was regarded by his village as their hope and pride. While Asta was bullied and mocked for his lack of magic.
(Asta's p.o.v.)
I had just turned 4 years old, the age when most kids develop their magic, but I was still magicless. Still though, that wasn't going to stop me from achieving my goal, to be someone others can depend on. I decided that if I can't use magic to fight, I'll train my body so that I'll be able to fight. Everyday, I went under the giant skull of the demon, that was killed by the first Wizard King, to train. I did push-ups, sit-ups, squats, every kind of exercise to train every single muscle in my body. I even tried to develop my own form of martial arts by experimenting with how my body works, since no one in the village could fight hand to hand because they rely on their magic. After spending all day training, I head back to the church where I was raised. I always came home covered in mud and bruises, and the nun, Sister Lily, and priest, Father Orsi, who running the church would always tell me to stop training so hard, but I don't listen because they don't know anything about me. Despite being the ones who raised me, they have no idea how I feel about not being able to use magic, being called useless by the other kids, having no one who believes in them. Those two may have raised me since I was a baby, but they are, in a sense, strangers to me. The same went for the others kids in the church, including Yuno.
2 years later.
It was morning, after I ate breakfast, I went outside and was about to head out to train, but before I got ten feet away from the church, I heard a familiar voice call out, "Asta." I turned to see that it was a black haired boy with yellow eyes. I answered, "What, Yuno?" He said, "If you've been training to become a magic knight, then stop it. You can't use magic, so you would get killed on your first mission. That's why Sister Lily and Father Orsi want you to stop, they don't want you to die. So, give up and let me become a magic knight for the both of us." 'He thinks I'm training to become a magic knight? He can't be serious?' I thought. That was never what I was after. I knew from that age Magic knights are only in it for money and glory, they weren't fighting to protect people. My plan was to travel around and help anyone in need, working for a bunch of self absorbed aristocrats would only be a road block on my path. I said to Yuno, "You'll never understand me." I didn't bother continuing the conversation, so I just took off toward my training ground.
After training for 3 hours, I decided to take a break and cook some lunch. I decided to learn to cook for myself since I was going to need to learn to do so in the future. I caught a couple of rabbits in traps I set at the treeline of the nearby forest. Before I started training, I hung the rabbits up to drain the blood, and I skinned them with a knife a took from the church's kitchen. I set the meat to cook over a fire and waited half an hour until they were done.
I was halfway done eating when I heard a voice from the mouth of the Demon Skull say, "Hello, young man. What are you doing out here by yourself?" I looked to see an old man wearing a strange red mask with a long nose.
I asked him, "Who are you?" He replied, "My name is Sakonji Urokodaki, I was passing through the village when I smelled smoke from inside this giant skull, so I came to see what was burning." The skull was on the outskirts of the village, I was surprised that he could smell the smoke from the fire from that far away. Since he introduced himself, I thought I might as well do the same, "My name is Asta, as for what I'm doing here, I was training until I decided to take a break for lunch." I couldn't see his expression behind his mask, but I could tell that Urokodaki was curious about something. He asked, "Tell me, Asta. Why are you training? Are planning to become a magic knight when you grow up?" I replied, "No, even if I wanted to become a magic knight, I don't even have magic power. I'm training my body so I can fight and protect anyone who needs help." He came closer as I talked until he was on the opposite side of the campfire from me. He sat down and said to me, "So, you wish to be a sort of vigilante for the helpless, even though you were born without magic power? You're very ambitious, young man." He paused for a second and continued, "There's actually a profession that doesn't require you to be able to use magic. Would you like to hear what it is?"
