Kass toed off her shoes at the front door and found Kody in the kitchen preparing a couple of sandwiches. She sighed and plopped her bag on the counter.
"Everything okay?" He asked, slicing a tomato. "The kids are trying to build some kind of robot in the rec room."
Kass put her face in her hands as she leaned on the counter, watching him. "Batty called me. He's going to be a couple more days."
Kody paused his actions, setting the ingredients on the cutting board he was using. "Again, everything okay?"
"No. I got some bad news from Calgary. Um," Kass took a deep breath. "I don't know if you remember Beck, but his grandmother passed this morning."
"Oh shit, I know how close you were with their family growing up. You've told me stories." Concern grew on his face. "His parents over there now?"
"I didn't have the chance to ask." Kass said. "You know all my grandparents died when I was super young. She was like my own grandmother. I wish I went to see her after my parents' deaths, but it was too hard. And now she's gone."
Kody came around the counter and turned her around to face him. "Don't let yourself blame yourself. I'm sure she knew just how much you loved her. And if I know Beck, I know he would have talked about you all the time. Something else is bothering you."
Kass nodded. "Yah. I have to tell Tules. She'll be upset to learn that she passed before she got to meet her."
"Adams DNA remember? She'll be sad, but she'll be okay." Kody offered her a small smile and returned to his previous place to finish off the sandwiches. "What is it?"
Kass sighed again. "I don't know. I just have a weird feeling."
"About her death?"
She nodded. "Yah. I don't know why. Nothing seems suspicious or anything. And she was old. In her eighties."
"Maybe you're overthinking it or letting the guilt drive you," Kody offered. "Don't think about it too much. You'll make yourself crazy." He smiled gently at her when she nodded. "You wanna grab a couple cans of Coke from the fridge?"
She grabbed the cans and followed Kody to the rec room. Sure enough, the kids were busily building a robot of some kind. There were pieces of electronics everywhere. She handed a can to each of the preteens while Kody doled out the sandwiches.
"How's everything going in here?" Kass asked, folding her arms over he chest. She looked around the room in amazement.
"Awesome! Were building a robot to help with little tasks, like screwing in small screws or hammering small nails in tight places." Tules stated excitedly.
"Yah, we'll be finished in an hour or so," Darwin exclaimed. "Tules is a great partner for this kinda stuff."
Tules blushed under his praise and quickly shoved him. He shot her a glare and they continued working.
"Make sure you guys eat, too. We'll be out there," Kody motioned to the back of the house.
The grownups went back to the kitchen to tidy up and Kody started making two more sandwiches.
"No, I'm okay. You don't need to make me one." Kass said.
"You need to eat," Kody pointed at her. "You're wasting away over there."
"I can still kick your ass," Kass said wryly. "Really, I'm good. I ate earlier at my meeting before I grabbed Tules and I'm still kinda full."
"Meeting?" Kody's eyebrows quirked. "You have a job already?"
