Calvin was going bonkers.
Seriously.
The situation was so pathetically sad that it seemed funny.
And now he was quoting books.
He was surrounded by hundreds of demons, the only thing protecting him them from painful death was mental ability of a teenage magician and an Archer who was shooting three arrows at once.
What was he doing? You ask.
Oh he? He was just standing there, being useless.
He had dealt with the three demons who had filtered through the force field and was now standing without any work.
A freelancer claw infiltrated the force field, hitting Ria in the shoulder making her wince.
Wasn't he a prince.
Wasn't his dad the strongest merman known?
Then why was he not able to access any of the magic merman voodoo?
He thought back to the time when he brought down a wall with water. He tried to channel the same power, he imagined the water in the lake rising and engulfing the tide of demons. Nothing happened except for causing a few ripples.
Panic filled in his mind as he saw the shield flicker, letting in a demon. It evaporated immediately with Kaira's arrow.
His mom's, his actual mom, not the biological one, voice filled his head, "Breath deep, Calvin. When things go wrong, think with your heart. You have an amazing mind but amazinger heart."
Calvin chuckled at her mom's deliberate grammar mistake and his dad's reply that had followed, "Aww, so sappy. You should make an inspirational quote website. But put a warning, 'Terrible grammar ahead. Watch out.'"
A resolve formed in Calvin's mind. His parents may not be his real parents, they may have loved him out of duty, but he loved them with all his heart and will continue to do so.
If, he lived.
After that, it seemed like his body was moving in automotion.
He went to the edge of the rock, his body suddenly thrumming with power and magic. His hands burned and he was pretty sure they were glowing.
He jumped off the the edge in a moment of thoughtlessness. When he fell, everything seemed to go in slow motion.
He could see the path of Kiara's arrow in the air, before hitting three demons with a sickening thunk.
He could hear Ria's knees hit the floor with a thud, which was not possible, given the sound of the monsters around him and that she was wearing leather.
But he did. The monster' screams were a dull, throbbing background noise, and at the same time, it was loudest, most sickening sound he had ever heard.
He saw as the force field around him snapped opened and hundreds of demons enter the lake he was going to fall into, all in slow motion.
Isn't this what happens in the movies before the protagonist dies?
Well, he was the protagonist. And if he was going to die, he was very well going to take the demons with him. He fell with a splash in the pond. The water was greenish, and definitely sick looking, (not ideal for noodles, mind you) but Calvin didn't care.
He saw the world around him dark. He closed his eyes, and red spots appeared on his eyelids, like when you stare at the sun with your eyes closed.
He could feel the magic around him. He could feel his sides open, and he was was pulled back to when he had first opened his wings.
Similar pain shot out from his sides, and his newly unfurled fins burnt red hot. He could feel the water around him burn, but he could only feel cold, because he was hotter.
Because the water was getting heated because of him.
In mere seconds, the water around him was boiling. He heard the screams all around him, of demons that were being boiled to death. But he couldn't hear.
Those demons deserved to die.
They were monsters.
He was going to boil them to death.
Then he heard a scream. It sounded vaguely familiar. It came from water.
His eyes opened. In front of him, Kiara was flailing, with her skin burnt raw in boiling water. His eyes widened. The entire lake was empty, he had vaporized the demons in the water and the demons on the land, they were looking at him with fear.
He tried to get the water temperature down, but nothing happened. In a few moments, Kiara's lifeless body floated up to the water surface.
When the child of winds and waves;
Yep, that would be him.
In the land of demons;
Check.
Does an act of monstrosity;
A monster. That's what he was. A monster. A murderer. A demon like those he killed.
In ignorance and innocence;
He wasn't ignorant. He definitely wasn't innocent. He was a murderer.
The spirit of Devfronds shall be awakened.
And he saw the spirit of Devfronds being awakened. Soft singing rang out from everywhere and nowhere. Its voice was deep and calming, and at the same time its pitch was so high he felt his ears would blast off.
Words overlapped each other, and yet, the music was soft to hear. It felt like sirens were pumping in his ear, and at the same time it felt like soft flute was ringing in his ears.
The rocky, hellish terrain around him started morphing.
The heat lowered, the boiling pond cooled. The water was no more green and sickly. It was clear, cool and inviting. The floor of the pond had beautiful plants and weeds growing, which could be seen easily from the clear water.
The ground morphed into soft soil, before trees grew from it. Bushes surrounded the trees and beautiful flowers grew on them.
Calvin swam to the edge where the remaining demons had disappeared. Grass grew across the soil, covering his feet in soft materials.
The singing stopped leaving behind ringing silence. And at the same time the trees rustled in air, grass moved, and as in synchrony, the birds started singing.
Where did they even come from?
Susan, Braedon, Ria, and many others in armour and amazed faces were standing on an island in the middle of the lake. Calvin flew to them, and collapsed on the grass....
Author's note:
Short chapter, I know. But this seemed like a really good place to stop.
How are you liking the book so far?
Kiara's dead, Calvin finally accepted his heritage, The spirit of Devfronds has been awakened.
And...its all being live streamed.
So, happy reading. The next chapter will probably be the last, and it will tie up everything nice and easy.
