Chapter 7. I Didn't Confess
How much was he scolded?
"Are you wearing pajamas right now, Lejan?"
Dr. Lejan, standing in the middle of the bedroom in his pajamas, holds a cigarette in one hand and a bag in the other.
He must have originally had it on his side, but currently, he's holding it by the top. With a long sigh, he walks to me as if he has frozen over.
"Yes."
"..."
"You've a very extreme husband. Hi, Leo."
Lejan, who has a cigarette on the right corner of his mouth, waves at Leo, who's lying at my feet.
After raising his head, Leo barks.
"But, where is that extreme husband?"
It's natural that he'd think Charles would be next to me, so Lejan swings his head around and looks for Charles.
"Ah, he hurried out to do some work."
"At this time in the night?"
"He left before nightfall."
"I see. He called on me as if he was going to kill me at any moment if I didn't come any sooner, but His Excellency left his sick wife alone and went to work leisurely."
"......"
"Get a divorce."
Lejan's words about divorce as if he knows something makes my heart beat nervously.
I then laugh since it's only Leo who knows what I'm going through.
He glances at Leo, who's sniffing around me, as he opens his bag with a long yawn.
"You have a stomach ache- Oh, is that it?"
"Yeah, it hurt like somebody was squeezing it, but I'm fine now."
"How severe was the pain?"
I imagine about the time my appendix ruptured-
"I couldn't breathe."
I then make up some symptoms.
Although Lejan looks like a quack, he is a fairly competent doctor, so it's obvious that he would quickly find out that it's all a gimmick if I try to add more symptoms.
"But after that, it didn't hurt anymore."
"Ah."
Lejan, who's been rummaging through his bag, smirks and nods as he chews on his cigarette .
"I see."
"Yes, I'm fine now."
"Your Grace has pretended to be sick."
Even before I can finish saying that I'm fine, Lejan diagnoses me as someone who's faked my sickness. He then looks up at me, who's on the bed, before slumping down on the floor.
I also meet his gaze and stare at him as if we're having a staring contest.
"Right?"
He smiles awkwardly as his narrowed eyes poke through my words innocently.
"Haha. You're not a fool! Why would I pretend to be sick?"
"Well, it's either you had to run away from a crisis because of a situation, or you needed an excuse to tell His Excellency to leave. There are many reasons."
I'm sure I look like I've seen a ghost
He's always been cheery, but Lejan, who always smiles slyly, seems quite resentful that he was dragged out of bed today.
However-
"There is no reason to pretend to be ill."
Once you've decided to lie, you'll have to keep at it till the end.
"It really did hurt."
"..."
"It must have been that His Excellency was surprised and called Dr. Lejan up to the capital with Hortman."
"Yes, that must have been it."
Lejan then calls for Leo and puts him on the bed. Watching Leo stretching himself out, Lejan's expression softens.
At the sight of Leo, who's become so large that he covers one side of the bed, he opens his mouth in surprise as he sits down.
"I think he has grown a bit."
"It is said that humans grow only when they enter each stage of puberty, but a wolf grows according to its own growth rate."
"Beastman are so diverse that they seem to be very mysterious."
Lejan, who looks at Leo's long silver tail hanging down to the floor, then shakes his head and looks at me with his eyes twinkling as if he has thought of something.
"Oh, right. About that milk."
I blink, wondering if I have been caught after using his name to sell milk.
"Somehow, my name got dropped into the conversation with it."
Lejan, who looks as if he's saying, 'You sold a lot of money,' in a classy way, stares at me.
Of course, he doesn't mean to stare at me, and instead, just wants to show his look of teasing resentment as he complains.
"Ah...haha."
I smile awkwardly and hug Leo's neck to avoid his gaze.
"It is a law that something can have good publicity if the words come from someone with some authority. No matter how much I said, 'Milk is good for your bones,' I'd only get look that said, 'What would a poor baroness know?'"
"......"
"So I borrowed the reputation of Dr. Lejan, the duke's doctor and assistant to the duke."
It isn't that I have to get permission from Lejan in advance, but it is true that I'd deceived people by saying, "Dr. Lejan said so" and that "He liked it."
Lejan has never said anything like that.
No matter how innocent my words were, it is true that I lied, so if he is angry, I have to accept it humbly.
"Good job."
The corners of my mouth twitch.
"You're fine with it?"
"I did say it was good for the bones, didn't I?"
With a smile, as if he is very satisfied with his reputation being used here and there, he then stands up, rolling up the sleeves of his pajamas.
"Thanks to Your Grace, young people are drinking a lot of milk. Anyone can have it with just 1 brie."
Lejan nods and looks at me.
"I don't know about right now, but maybe in the long run, it will become clearer that it has a good effect on the territory."
"Good job," says Lejan.
He dusts his behind, holding a cigarette in one hand, and turns around with a bag tucked to his side.
He looks like an older brother leaving as he rubs his eye, using his index and middle fingers.
"Oh, and Ergel asked me to tell you that because of the huge amount of donations that day, she thinks it will be possible to supply milk to the residents of the territory without any problems for the next several years."
Lejan turns his upper body around slightly.
"Milk tea and sunrise milk are also selling well, so she asked me to tell you."
Then, he flashes a smile and a wink.
I feel like I'm having a slightly funny dream, so I narrow my brows a bit, but Lejan continues speaking without even paying attention to my expression.
"It's a big hit."
"......"
"You seem to have a knack for business."
He turns away, biting his lip slightly, as if he's smirking.
This time, he uses his index and middle fingers to wave good-bye.
Lejan seems to be drunk with his own coolness as he slowly moves away from me..
.Lejan comes then leaves. Pope comes in once he's gone to make my bed for me and to take Leo out.
Even after so long, Charles does not return.
As the night passes, I stare at his vacant spot for a long time, which doesn't get filled even when dawn comes.
Alright.
A man who disappears, leaving only the word yes behind, and does not return even when it's dawn.
What do I know about what he's thinking?
"Oh, I don't know either."
I shake my head and get up.
No matter how hard I try to use my head and predict things, nothing is going as planned. If I make a hasty prediction, on the other hand, it might end up hurting me.
Right now, I have to calm down before I can be concerned, care or anticipate other people's feelings.
I'm also not happy to hear that the business is doing well.
I wonder if I would have been happy to hear the news that it was ruined, but that might be just as bad.
In addition to this strange feeling, if Charles sees Abigail today and falls in love at first sight, how would this novel go? I try to imagine it.
It would be chaos upon chaos.
To be honest, I can't even fathom the emotions I might feel if I encounter that moment in person.
"Oh, I don't know."
I shake my head and bury my face in between my knees.
I just want to go back to Lapel and get away from all this trouble.
First of all, it is a place where I don't have to worry about Charles meeting Abigail, and for the time being, it is our estate where he will never meet Abigail and fall in love.
Only then will I be able to clearly define my feelings for him.
Okay, let's go back.
I pull the rope with my eyes wide open..
.That afternoon, people who deepen my anguish visit the mansion.
"My daughter...My Abella, where are you?"
A noise, echoing from the front of the mansion, that's sharp enough to break the glass, crawls up the wall to the third floor, where I was.
"Who is it?"
I turn my head around while I'm teaching Leo the game of chess.
"Shall we come and find out?"
"Yes, let's do that."
Pope, who quickly leaves the salon at my prompting, nods and then returns shortly thereafter.
From her serious expression to the current noise outside—
I look at her with an uneasy expression, as if feeling like I somehow know the identity of the noise.
Again, the owner of the voice is—
"Baron Farhan and his wife have come."
They're Abella's biological father and stepmother.
"Alright. Falcon should have stopped them and their escorts. How did they get in?"
"Well..."
As for how they've gotten in, I catch her hint from the word escorts so I nod.
"Pope, can you close the window? It's noisy."
"Yes."
As soon as I say it, Pope and the other servants immediately move and close the window.
Leo, who is standing next to me, glances up at me with his drooping eyebrows
He looks like he has a lot to say to me, but because of the maids, he keeps his mouth shut and pouts his lips.
"Can you tell Falcon to get them out?"
"....."
"If the escorts don't listen, tell the duke and knights to kick them out."
"......"
However, Pope hesitates to follow my words without saying more.
I look toward Leo then back at her.
"Pope."
"It is said that the baron and his wife are accusing the duke."
She confesses bluntly.
"For what crime?"
"He'ss claiming that His Excellency is abusing you.".
.
.
.
T/N: This chapter was fun. Lejan being a little shit and like, "Divorce his ass. DO ITTTTT" It's as if he doesn't want to live anymore. Also, the more I hear about Abella's parents, the more I feel sorry for her. Poor girl. Never had a chance at all.
Also, the audacity to accuse him of abusing Abella? Like the gall y'all?
Not my himboooo... He'd never hurt his wife...
