"I beg your pardon?"
"Oh, I was talking to myself."
"Right Now?!"
Perhaps my self-talk was seriously too loud, but people's gaze sticks to Evangeline and my face.
Not only the young ladies sitting in front, but also the maids.
"Pope?"
I intentionally pull those eyes away.
"Are these the people?"
The eyes look to Pope then back to Evangeline.
I look at Pope as if it had nothing to do with me, not caring about what Evangeline looks like or what kind of cruel look she has on.
"Yes."
It looks like there was an earthquake because their eyes shake for a bit.
I only knew that I was hated by the previous duchess, but I didn't think it was like this. Did she have this kind of personality?
Then, did you hide that personality until now?
The gazes turn toward me from all directions.
"Your Grace!"
"Really?"
I refreshingly cut off her words and turn my head to talk with Pope.
"Yes."
"What about the testimony?"
"They've admitted it all."
"Really? Then, kick them all out."
On the order to expel all four of the maids that Pope has brought in—
"Your Grace!"
"Are you crazy?"
Not only the maids, but also Catherine and Evangeline raise their voice.
At the sound of them—
"My ear hurts."
I close my ears with both hands.
Is it that she can't see or that she doesn't care?
"With what rights are you doing this?"
Evangeline jumps up from her seat and stands in front of me.
"Rights?"
I shrug and raise my head at her.
"The right as a duchess."
"......"
"Because I am the Duchess of Diago."
I blink my eyes.
"What else do you need? How about for my self interest?"
Absolute value that cannot be described.
Evangeline, who can't say anything to me and knows something about abusing her power, then bites her lip.
"......"
With her staying silent like that—the power is so good.
I feel like I can get drunk with the taste of it.
Everyone, including the high-spoken Lady of the Duke, can't say anything about my authority.
Power is the best.
At least in Lapel Castle where anything I want to do, I can do it.
I look at Evangeline, recalling her words.
"That's my answer."
"You are making a big mistake."
Evangeline points her chin toward the ceiling.
"My family doesn't throw people out easily. His Excellency is still—"
"It's not easy to throw them out. They did something wrong."
"What's wrong?"
"It was a very big mistake."
"So what was it?!"
"Erin must know."
"What?!"
"Can I talk here? Our story about Leo."
"Hah, was it really that?"
Evangeline shakes her head as if it's absurd.
"You are going to drive out the long-established maids from Lapel Castle because of that filthy and terrible beast baby? Are you crazy?"
Evangeline screams as if she's the one in charge.
"Is it dirty and terrible? I'm not sure about that."
I then smile and raise my teacup.
I'm not sure if she can read the meaning behind my smile.
"I think those who hit fragile and dirty things until they are sick are worse."
"What are you talking about now? It's a soo-in. You think you can compare that thing to the maids now?"
Evangeline shouts and stomps her feet.
"For generations, Lapel has banned soo-ins. Do you know how much talk there is about raising a male one in the capital?"
"Really?"
"His Majesty barely gave permission to Queen Mother's request for one, but it is still a forbidden beast in Lapel! If it's like before, you'd have to kill it or kick it out of the Lapel."
"Kill it?"
When I hear Evangeline's words, a bloody voice springs out by itself.
"Yes!"
It seems that she doesn't want to lose.
"I can't thank you for that alone!"
At that moment—
"Oh my God! Did you put that into your castle again? Are you crazy?"
Evangeline screams in astonishment, taking several steps backward, when she sees Leo walking in from a distance.
It's the same for the ladies who are next to him.
As if terribly surprised, they jump up from their seat and cling to the wall behind them when he turns his head and looks at them.
"He'll be staying in the castle starting today."
"Your Grace!"
"With me, in Lapel Castle."
"Are you crazy?"
"No."
"My brother's permission—"
"Well, our Charles, no, His Excellency has told me to do everything that I wanted to do."
"So, what?! Does the duchess want to do something forbidden at Lapel? Are you out of your mind?"
"It's not forbidden."
"You have banned it in Lapel. This is Lapel Castle. Raising it in the ranch isn't that different."
"That's not forbidden either."
"......."
Shrugging, I look at Leo, and then I walk closer to Evangeline.
"What, what are you doing—"
Evangeline walks backwards as if she's feeling threatened by our close distance.
"His Excellency has given me permission."
"When?"
"Well, this evening?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"He gave me permission this evening."
"Are you from the future?"
"Yes."
He knows who I am.
When I smirk at that thought, Evangeline, whose face turned red because my laughter probably sounds like ridicule, stares at me with bloody eyes.
I just laugh at her reaction since I'm the winner of this fight.
With a lazy smile of a winner, I continue speaking.
"I'm going to tell His Excellency that I'm going to raise Leo, and he'll definitely allow it."
"......"
"I heard His Majesty did the same. The reason why he allowed the forbidden beast was because of the Empress's request."
"How is that and this the same?"
"It's the same because my husband is the law in Lapel."
"My mother—"
"Go ahead."
Evangeline once again mentions her mother.
"Do as you please."
"Then do you think—"
"Yes, try to see if I'll be okay or not. Acting as Madame Erst's agent. You will lose more in the future, Lady Evangeline."
At the harsh words, Evangeline's shoulders shake.
"Why are you so nervous?"
With a bloody smile, I dust off my shoulders and approach her.
But Evangeline raises her chin as if she isn't going to lose.
"If you behave so arrogantly, you will hurt your nose."
"Well, it's okay."
"Why, because your husband is my brother?"
"No, because my husband is the Duke of Diago."
"Ha!"
Evangeline tilts her head.
"Ah—"
As if I remember it belatedly, I grab Evangeline's shoulders and pull her into a hug.
To that creepy act—
"What are you doing!"
"Shhh—"
Evangeline resists, trying to twist her body.
I have a little bit more strength than her.
I embrace Evangeline, who is intimidated only by what she sees.
"I value mine very much."
"......."
"My people especially."
I then pat her back.
"So, I hope you don't touch my people again, Lady Evangeline."
"You will regret doing this to me. A daughter of a baron who has a beggar-like title."
"Is that all?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"I'm asking if this is all or not. If that's not all, it would be ridiculous for a princess to do this in front of me."
"......."
"I told you a while ago that the only reason you can do this to me is because you're a princess, didn't I? A member of the Duke of Diago."
"......."
"Even a member of the duke's family will be leaving Diago Duchy soon."
I feel Evangeline's body tremble with anger at my bloody words.
"I'm angry."
I pat her on the back once more.
"Get rid of your anger."
"......."
"If you get mad at me more here, I'll probably be seen as the tragic heroine."
Then we lift our head a little and look around the room to see many people around us. Evangeline grates her teeth as if her common sense has returned.
That's what I'm looking at.
"Lady Evangeline."
I whisper very tenderly in her ear.
"Please, don't make me the tragic heroine."
"........"
"Lady Evangeline.".
