Two weeks in to being at home and it was nothing less than amazing. Ben kept her on her toes but she really tried with him like she promised.
They spent time together all the time. Whenever they could squeeze it in.
"You ready?" Ben asked looking at Miranda who was fixing her blouse for the third time.
"Yes." She mumbled biting her lip before unbuckling her seatbelt.
Today was the day that she was going to be meeting her husband's parents and to say she was nervous was an understatement.
"It's going to be fine and you look absolutely beautiful." He smiled before leaning over to kiss her lips.
Miranda sighed and relaxed into the kiss caressing his face.
Ben came around the car and opened the door for her.
"Thanks." Miranda smiled wearily opening the back door to grab the dessert containers. She brought a red velvet cake and a cheesecake because she couldn't decide. Ben told her she didn't need to bring anything, but she didn't want to show up empty handed.
The camera crew was behind them ready to capture everything for the world to see. Miranda just hoped this went right so she wouldn't be embarrassed on national television.
Ben held her hand as they walked to the door. He had a key, but he didn't want to just walk in. They rung the doorbell and waited until the door opened.
"Hey dad." Ben smiled.
Miranda looked over the tall older man and took in his features. He looked like an older version of her husband. If this is what she had to look forward to in the future, she was very pleased and fortunate. His eyes widen looking at the camera crew and Miranda cut her eyes towards Ben. "You told them we were being filmed right."
"Yeah." Ben whispered back.
They stepped inside the house and Miranda looked to the right and saw a brown skin older woman walk into the room, coming from the kitchen she assumed. Her hair was curled nicely and she was wearing a dress.
"Benjamin." Patricia squealed walking over and pulling him into a hug.
"Hey mom." Ben smiled squeezing her back. When he let go he grabbed Miranda's hand and pulled her into his side.
"Mom and dad, this is my beautiful wife Dr. Miranda Bailey and Miranda these are my parents James and Patricia Warren."
"It's so nice to meet you. Mr. and Mrs. Warren." Miranda smiled.
"It's nice meeting you too and call me James." His dad said. Miranda eyed his mom as she said nothing and she sighed this was going to be long night.
Ben cleared his throat looking at his mom." Is that chicken I smell?"
"Yes. I made all your favorites." She grinned at him.
"Miranda made dessert."
"Yes um this a red velvet cake and a cheesecake." Miranda smiled handing the containers to who took them cautiously.
"Thank you." His mom spoke turning to walk in the kitchen. Miranda eyed Ben once again as to what was next.
Ben shrugged grabbing her hand walking into the living room.
"We have about 5 more minutes on the rolls and then everything will be done and we can eat." Patricia yelled from the kitchen.
"James can you come melt this butter for me." She added and they watched as his dad got up walking into the kitchen.
"She hates me." Miranda told Ben.
"No she doesn’t."
"Well what part did I miss to think other wise." Miranda asked Ben.
"It's just a shock to her. It will be fine." Ben assured pulling her into a side hug ad he kissed her head.
Miranda laid into his neck and she tried to calm down. Ben held her hand and rubbed it back and forth soothingly.
Shortly after the door opened and Curt walked in. "Hey am I late."
"Hi my baby and no you are actually just on time." Patricia smiled hugging him.
"The rolls are finished come on let's eat."
Everyone walked into the dining room and took a seat. The food was passed around and Miranda put everything on her plate.
"Everything looks delicious." Miranda complimented.
"Thank you." Patricia responded.
Just then Miranda's phone began to ring. "Sorry." Miranda said sheepishly, pulling it out of her pocket. She read that it was Tucker calling and she sighed.
"I’m so sorry. I have to take this." Miranda said standing and walking out of the dining room.
Miranda talked with Tucker about dropping Tuck of tomorrow at day care and then she walked back towards the dining room.
"You really like this woman?" Ben's mother asked.
"I actually really do. She's perfect for me." Ben told his mother and couldn't contain his grin.
Miranda smiled but then frowned as Ben's mother clicked her teeth. "Why did you click your teeth? You're upset that I like her?" Ben whispered.
"Yes, I'm upset because you are gambling at love and you don't know this woman's true intentions. She could just be doing this just for the money and it all could be pretend. I don't trust her yet and I don't want you too either. I don't want you to get your hopes up Ben and then have to deal with heart break." His mother empathize worried.
"First that woman's name is Miranda and two. Strangers gamble and take a chance at love, TV show or not. Everyday people take the chance at being in love. I'm doing it this way and you may not like it but it's my life and my choice and she is not doing it for the money. She a surgeon for God's sake but the least you can do is treat her nice " Ben huffed crossing his arms.
Miranda waited a little and then walked around the corner. "Sorry my conversation took so long." Miranda stated as she came and sat at the dining table.
"So Miranda what made you choose the career path of a surgeon?" Ben's dad asked.
"I think I wanted to be a surgeon since elementary school. I was always trying to fix something. A baby bird fell out a tree and I had to help him and fix his wing. My stuff animals I sewed them up and anything else. I think I was just destined to do it."
Ben looked at her as she talked. She was just so captivating. He slid his hand in hers as she continued to answered questions from his parents.
"So how did your parents feel about this?" Curt asked.
"My mom is very protective but she was more open and understanding. Now my father. I'm his only child and he is not understanding this at all." Miranda told them.
"I can understand." Patricia said.
"Yeah, I Don't hold it against them. Everyone has a right to feel how they wanna feel when it comes to their children. If my son were do something like this. I would be down his throat and probably disapproving as well. It's a mother's instinct to protect their kids no matter how old they are. Which why I get why you're worried about Ben and especially me. It's hard to trust someone like this."
Ben's eyes widen because he knew Miranda heard the conversation with his mother and he inwardly sighed.
"I think it's unfair and iffy." His mother stated.
"Unfair?" Miranda questioned
"You had a weeding and left the parents out. That's a once and a life time experience and it wasn't fair for me not to see my son get married."
Miranda thought about it and she felt terrible on that part. This was the man's mother and he went on and got married with out her.
"Mom I'm sorry. I know how much that would have meant to you and I didn't even think about it and for that I do apologize." Ben stated.
"We can have another wedding and do it the correct way after this year is up." Miranda suggested. She wasn't even a fan of another wedding but it was Ben's first and should have been done right.
"Yeah great idea babe. We are going to plan a wedding in a year so think of this like our engagement period." Ben suggested and Miranda smiled nodding and grabbed his left hand giving it a squeeze.
Miranda and Ben the following weekend flew to Miranda's parents house and like she thought, it didn't go over good with her dad at all and he just plainly ignored her and Ben like she didn't even exist.
Miranda cried in Ben's chest that night because her dad's reaction and current state, hurt her feelings and really wounded her.
She loved her father more than anything and just wanted him to be proud and pleased with her.
Ben didn't realize how much Miranda was a daddy's girl until that weekend. He hated how vulnerable she was and how her dated treated her.
He didn't care what her dad thought about him but to treat Miranda like she was literally no one because of her decision was harsh and he didn't want that to come out on tv at all, her mother however was very sweet.
Miranda shed passed all of her dad’s actions and sung, cooked and went to church with her mother.
The two women were so similar but also could be polar opposites in some situations. Miranda was a go getter and her mother was laid back more on the afraid side.
Ben assumed Miranda's spit fire and fast come backs came from her father.
When the weekend came to a close. Miranda and Ben said goodbye to her parents and the two was just grateful to be able to go home and just be together with out any judgement or animosity.
Miranda laid on Ben's chest and she snuggled into him "I think you're mom and my dad will eventually come around. Once they see the longevity and realness of us."
"I agree." Ben spoke rubbing his hand on her thigh.
"I don't care what anyone thinks though. I know my feelings are real and I like you a lot so screw all the na sayers." Miranda mumbled sleepily.
"Dam right." Ben replied in agreement kissing her head.
