I made it to Trent's mom's place and fixed myself up in the car before going inside.
"Mommy!" Trevante squealed as he ran to me.
"Hey, baby girl! It's been so long since I've seen you. How have you been?" Mrs. Smith asks while hugging me tightly.
"I'm doing alright, just taking things one day at a time."
"I'm so glad I got to see you." She smiled and seemed genuinely happy.
"It was good seeing you too," I said as I hugged her.
"I won't keep you long, I know you need to be at home resting." She passed me Trevante's belongings and walked us to the car.
On the way home, I made a few stops; I just wanted to clear my head for a bit.
"Tre?" I called out, looking at him in my rearview.
"Yes!" he answered.
"Can you keep this a secret? I don't want Marquis to know you were at Grandma Smith's house, okay."
" Why?"
"No questions! Can you please just keep this between us?"
"Okay."
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Last question, I'm missing my show," he said pressing pause on his tablet. I couldn't help but giggle to myself. This child acts just like his damn daddy!
"What did you do today with Trent?" I asked glancing in the rearview mirror once more. His eyes lit up when I mentioned Trent's name.
"We had fun!" he said excitedly. " He bought me a lot of toys." Even without looking, I could tell he was smiling from ear to ear.
"What kind of fun?" I asked, pulling into Walmart's parking lot.
"We played with toys. He bought me ice cream and..."
"Did he say anything about me?" I asked cutting him off mid-sentence.
"No! He said that he miss me." his voice suddenly went from excited to sad. " I miss him, Mommy!" he said tearing up.
I should've just kept my mouth shut!
"I know you do, baby," I said unhooking my seat belt so that I could fully turn around and talk to him.
"He put money in my packpack for you," he said reaching into his backpack and pulling out a thick stack of money wrapped in a rubber band. "He told me not to tell my granny because she was going to give it back to him."
Why is he sending me money? I hope he doesn't think this will make me change my mind! I snatched his bag away from him and started rifling through it to see if there was anything else inside, along with the money. The rest of his bag was empty, so I checked inside his lunchbox and found a note.
~ Kassie, if you're reading this, I assume Trevante has told you about the money I sent. This isn't a bribery gift, this is me letting you know how sorry I am. I sent you $10,000. I know you deserve more, but if my mom had found that much money in Tre's bag, she would have become suspicious. As I said, this is my apology to you, so please don't send it back. I love you and Trevante so fucking much, and I am sorry that things had to end this way between us.
