Jayden POV
*present day*
"Momma I'ma stop by later after work okay?" I say through my white iPhone 5s.
"Baby I told you I'm fine. Go ahead have fun go out tonight. You never do and it's Saturday" I roll my eyes and laugh.
"I'ma be there at 6 so ya know throw down in that kitchen. Bye love you" I say.
She just sighs "Alright Jayden I'll see you at 6. Goodbye baby I love you"
I smile to my self knowing that I won. My momma always wanting me to go out. But I don't need to. I got better things to worry about like school. Crazy huh? I know I changed. But after my pops died and we moved to Denver I changed everything. No more drinking, smoking, partying, fighting. I'm over it. I really wanted to start over and I did. When we moved out here I went to South High School and I loved it. Things are really different but for the better. The gang violence isn't nearly as bad as in Compton. And I was glad. Now I attend Denver University on my second year studying business and art. I haven't been back to Compton for 5 years and honestly I ain't even tripping. The only thing I got there is my 3 brothers. But they come down here every holiday to spend it with me and moms. They were just down here last weekend to celebrate my 21st birthday with me. I don't know why they wanted to stay in Compton. But all they say is they need to carry on pops' legacy. And I respect that but I just wish they'd drop the gang and come down here.
For once my life is actually looking up. I was diagnosed with depression at the age of 16 and let me tell you it sucked. I felt as if there was nothing left to live for. But then I knew I was being selfish because of course I had my mom to live for. But now I finally feel happy. I got school and my mom which is all I really need. I don't got no boyfriend. I figure I'm too young and all I need to focus on school and work before anything. And I'm doing good. I don't have to depend on anyone.
I got a nice job working at a tattoo shop. I love working here. When I'm drawing or tatting I just feel all my worries go away. And that's what I want to do when I'm finished with school I want to open my own tattoo shop. I'm barely 21 and I'm considered one of the best artists in Downtown Denver. During my depression I spent a lot of time drawing so you know I guess it was worth it.
I'm actually heading to work now. I got an appointment at 4 and it's 3:45. I work at this shop called 'Love & Hate Tattoo'. We get a lot of business because well we got 3 of the best artist out here, including me. Once I arrive I see my boss and smile.
"Hey Gabe, what's up" I say.
"I've been booked since 9 this morning so I'm kind of exhausted. What about you?" He says. When you got a lot of people in one day it does get pretty tiring.
"That sucks but at least you be making that bank" I say laughing which was true. He was definitely the best artist I've ever seen. And one day I hope to be as good as him.
He laughs and grabs my arm gently. "Girl when are you gonna let me tatt you up?" He asks. I laugh. I'm a 21 year old tattoo artist with not one tattoo. Im surprised I got this job. The requirments say I have to have visible tattoos. But Gabe gave me the job because he said he loved my work. You could say I was Blessed.
"When the time is right. I don't want to regret it 20 years later. Plus You know you're gonna be the one to do my first tatt" He laughs and walks to my Co worker. A young male early 20's came in.
"Hi can I help you?" I say smiling. He smiles back.
"Yeah I'm Luke and I have an appointment at 4 with Jayden?" He says. Here I go.
"Hey I'm Jayden. Nice to meet you. You can come on back to my booth." We walk to my station and start talking about his ideas. He finally decided on a Japanese dog. Which looks like a dragon. Once I was done drawing it out I got everything sanitized. And we began. He was getting it on his left forearm. I decided to strike up a conversation.
"So Luke how old are you?" I ask. Not taking my eyes off his arm.
"I'm 23. How about you?"
"I actually just turned 21. Last weekend." I say.
"That's crazy you're a sick artist for being 21 and a female." He says and I laugh. I get that a lot and I don't mind. We just kept talking for the next hour and a half.
"And you are finished" I say turning off the machine and taking off my black gloves. He looks down and smiles.
"That looks dope" He smiles and hugs me carefully watching his arm. I smile back and take pictures to add to my portfolio then wrap it up for him. We go to the front desk.
"Alright we were back there for about an hour and a half so the total is going to be 125$ I say smiling. He pulls out 150$ and tells me to keep the rest. Another reason I loved my job. It was 5:40 so I started heading to my mom's house. When I arrived I walked in and it smelt amazing. I loved my mommas food.
"Damn Momma you really are throwin down in that kitchen huh?" I say giving her a hug. She just looks at me and laughs.
"Be quiet and set the table" I do as I'm told and she starts serving our food. When she sets it down in front of me my mouth just waters. She made some fried chicken with mashed potatoes, collard greens and biscuits. I took a bite of chicken and my mom smacks my head.
"Girl I know you ain't eating before saying grace" I sigh and put the chicken down. My momma sits down across from me and we bow our heads as she says prayer.
"Amen" I say and start grubbin.
"So how was work?" She asks. And I just nod my head not wanting to get distracted from my food.
"Jayden Rose Collins you know how to talk so speak" She says folding her arms. I loved my mom to death.
"It was good Momma. I was done pretty quick. And he was happy with it" I say smiling.
She smiles at me. "I love how your eyes light up when you talk about that job" It was true. Tattooing was my passion. I continue eating when my mom's phone rings. She looks at the caller ID confused. I wait for her to answer.
"Hello?...Yes this is her" within them 3 seconds everything changed. My mom drops the phone begins crying histerically. I'm so confused I don't know what to do.
"Momma what's wrong?" I say nervously.
"Not my baby" is all I'm able to make out from her words. I didn't know exactly what was wrong but I had a pretty good Idea. My stomach drops and I pick up the phone.
"H-hello" I say my voice low and shaky not prepared for the words that were going to follow.
"Hello this is Detective Wilson. I'm calling from Compton Police Department. May I ask who I'm speaking to?" She says
"This is Jayden Collins. Veronica Collins' daughter." I say frantically. My mom still crying.
"Ms. Collins I'm terribly sorry to inform you, You're brother Jordan Collins has been murdered this last hour. We're gonna need you're mother to come do-" I guess that saying is true history repeats it's self huh? I didn't know what to say or feel or even think. I was so numb. Tears start pouring as what she said finally kicks in. All I can do is hold my mom and cry with her.
