Jackie's POV

I swear the first day of school is the most pointless day of school. All that happens is teachers give you a syllabus and tell you what to expect from their class, which usually consists of phrases like.
"This class won't be easy"
"There's gonna be a lot of homework but if you keep up with it like you should, then you won't have any problems."
Or my personal favorite.
"This class will prepare you for any course you will take in college so I don't want to hear any complaints of it being too hard, because if this is too hard then you might as well not even try to go to college."
And after they've finished their speeches, they spend the next forty-five minutes going over each item on their syllabus. If I had a car I would skip this day every year. But unfortunately I can't afford to buy one yet, so each year I get dropped off on this ridiculous day by one of my parents.

The only thing I have to look forward to is lunch, but even that is failing me now. I still need to tell Avery about my breakfast with her brother, but she's making it very difficult by gluing herself to Jayden and not really communicating with anyone outside of their delusional little bubble. Theo is nowhere to be found, which unfortunately leaves me stuck with the love birds.

Just when I think I might die, Dylan sits down next to me.
"I'm single." He states.
"You broke up with her? Hell yeah!" I say raising my hand in the air for a high-five. He glares at me.
"No, she broke up with." Embarrassed, I slowly lower my hand.
"Oh..." Is all I say.
"Fuck it, I'm not gonna stick around here. You wanna go?" He blurts. I look to Avery to see if they're witnessing this or if they're too wrapped up in themselves to notice. It's the latter.
"Fuck it." I reiterate and grab my bag from under the table and look around at them again. Avery seems to finally pull her gaze away from Jayden, glancing over at me. She doesn't say anything though, so I just keep walking.

I hop into his truck and stay silent as he pulls out of the parking lot. I'm not sure why he asked me to go with, maybe because I'm the only one he's been talking to about May? I'm not gonna complain if it gets me out of school though. After a few minutes I decide to speak.
"So..." I tread carefully, he's clearly pissed off right now and I'm not looking to upset him more.
"Are we ignoring it or talking about it?" I ask. It's only a short drive to his house, you could walk there if you really wanted to.  He quickly pulls into his driveway, throwing the truck in park.
"We can talk about it. While getting wasted." He says, extremely direct and gets out of the truck. Did he just say wasted? I follow him out and up the pathway to the porch.
"You know it's only noon right? On a Monday? Don't you think it's a bit early for that?" I ask, concerned. He opens the front door, and books it to the living room.
"Honestly I think I'm getting a late start. You can go though, I'll pay for an Uber to pick you up and take you wherever you want." When I get into the living room I see a bottle of whiskey already in his hand.
"I'll stay here." I reassure him. I know he doesn't want to be alone right now, or else he wouldn't have asked me to come with. And from the looks of it someone needs to be keeping an eye on him right now.

Avery's POV

4 o'clock rolls around and since my brother, aka my ride to/from school, decided to ditch with my friend, I either have to wait around for Jayden to get done with football practice or ask Theo for a ride. Jayden won't be done till well after 6pm and I don't feel like waiting that long. I haven't spoken to Theo since this morning when he bad-mouthed Jayden, and I'm not sure he'll even be willing to drive me home. I catch him just as he heads into the parking lot.
"Teddy!" I call out. He glares back at me but slows his pace, allowing me to catch up.
"Am I gonna have to be the first to apologize?" I ask, pouting. He stops in his tracks.
"Seriously?" He asks, eyebrow raised. I give out a hefty sigh.
"Okay, I'm sorry for ignoring you all day but you did call my boyfriend a dick." I defend my actions.
