Bruno carried her small body in his arms down the road to our home.
"You did say someone was being carried home tonight and it isn't you, mi amor..", I smiled. Tonight didn't end the way I had imagined it would but I decided to not dwell on the 'what if' scenarios going through my mind. Nothing could spoil this day for me. After I calmed down and all but our family left the party we unanimously agreed to meet tomorrow to discuss it.
There wasn't much to discuss. I had read the letter over and over again. At first it didn't make sense. Why would we even write a letter with so little information.. But the more I thought about it the more I realized that we had given us the only information possible without altering our own future. Diego would be back for her.
'Keep her safe... For now...'
"Má, since we're all going back home, can Arthuro stay the night?", I looked over at Benji who, in glorious Beno fashion, was completely unbothered by the events of the evening, asking as if this was any regular night.
Bruno shrugged at me. Ai dios mio, who decided to bless me with these laid-back men in my life. I rubbed my belly. Calma, calma, I reminded myself. A massive wave or worry hit me through the bond. Bruno's eyes narrowed. "I'm fine. We're fine. Everything's fine.", I waved.
"Sí Beno, go get him and come right back. No pit stops."
He sprinted off to the group house where Arthuro and a few others still stayed. The first to move into the new homes were either families or those that cared for any of the kids. The group house is mostly for singles and guards now, since we couldn't warrant building that many individual homes at once.
"I don't wanna walk anymore...", Mateo dragged his feet in my hand. "Please, mijo. I can't carry you right now.", I stroked a lock of his golden hair out of his face. Sad eyes looked up at me. "It's not that far. Look, you're almost there.", I smiled.
"Pá?", Teo turned to Bruno and reached for him. His tiny hands grasping at air.
Bruno sighed, scooping him up into his other arm. Two little heads rested on either side of his shoulders.
"At least you're getting in some practice.", I teased. He rolled his eyes at me. "Ay! You said you wanted four more.", I laughed.
Our pastel emerald door finally came into view. I'll never get tired of the sight of it. The only one of that color in our Encanto. It was beautiful and reminded me of Bruno. It was a softer shade of emerald, similar to the engagement ring he had picked for me. I opened the door for him and watched as he carefully laid Chaina down on the sofa. We didn't have a spare bed so this will have to do. The kids always dragged their mattress out into the living room for big sleepovers so we never really had a reason to need extra.
"Luna, go to bed, mi vida. I'll be there in a bit.", he disappeared into Mateo's room.
Chaina slept the whole way home. Whatever happened, she must have been exhausted. I looked down at her sleeping form on the sofa and sighed, covering her with the blanket. I'll just put something out for her to drink and a small snack in case she wakes up. I'll still beat Bruno to bed cause getting a sleepy Mateo changed is nearly impossible. Like putting pants on a river.
I crept past Mateo's door. The sounds of Bruno softly talking to Teo melted my heart. And I get to have this for the rest of my life. He asked me to marry him. Me.. It was starting to hit me, alone with my thoughts. I dipped into our room, stripped out of my dress and grabbed the shorts and top he always picks out for me when I ask him to get my clothes. They still barely count as clothes in my opinion but he obviously enjoys them.
Me. A Madrigal.
I pulled my legs under myself on the bed.
"Su esposa..", I whispered to myself.
