Peter was right on time as he arrived at the Oscorp tower, regardless of his watch telling him he was late. Jarvis was so confused he had to recalibrate his navigation system. While he did so, Peter entered the building. There was already a visitors batch waiting for him at the reception, and he could grab it and go straight for the escalator to get up to Conners's unit.
It was weird to meet him without Liam, but his boyfriend had insisted on staying out of him bonding with his late father's friend. He wanted this to be Peter's alone. Also, he had added, he liked to keep his entanglements with Oscorp low-key for as long as he wasn't CEO of his own company yet. Liam even had a calendar marking each day, counting down to his birthday in less than two months. He hadn't had told Peter yet what that was all about, but every time the boy looked at that calendar, his eyes got grim.
Reminiscing about his handsome boyfriend, Peter almost missed getting off the escalator in time, but his body did that job for him without thinking. Oscorp was still impressive to whiteness. He felt so small walking the massive hallways, just a single human being in the circle of life that was so much bigger. Conner was already waiting for him. After a quick greeting, he started to show Peter around for a first look-over. "We have protein structure, rDNA, chromatography, transgenic testing, that's X-ray Video. That's the only one on the planet." Connors pointed at one of the devices. Peter could spot a tiny tag on it saying: Stark med. So a part of Liam was here after all.
"We have, um...human line testing over..." Connors continued. But Peter had spotted another device he had seen before. " I remember that." he pointed to the steaming, massive gun-like machine in the corner of the room. It was secured behind a wall of glass. "I've seen that before." "The Ganali device," Connors smiled, impressed. " Yeah, I remember a picture of that in my dad's office." Peter nodded. Both of them got closer while Conner explained: "The idea was simple. Load it with an antigen. It creates a cloud, which can be dispersed over a neighborhood, an entire city. Theoretically, you could cure polio in an afternoon." Peter was in awe about the technology he was witnessing. This was a milestone.
"incredible!" he breathed out, marveling at all the cables and tubes running into the device. This thing could be the end to any disease on the earth. "Others disagreed.", Conners pointed out, his gaze jumping from the device to Peter and back. "What if the device were loaded with a toxin? What if you want to opt-out? You can't run from a cloud after all, so here it lies, gathering dust." What a shame.
The next stop they made was at the hologram projector, where a model of Conners's experiments was already running. A lizard and a double helix of DNA we're shown. "We're trying to harness this capability and transfer it into our host subject," Conners explained. A mouse appeared beside the lizard. "Freddy, the three-legged mouse." The man pushed a few buttons. "Enter the algorithm now," he advised Peter. That was an honor, and Peter did as he was told with confidence. In the middle of the process, his phone rang. Uncle Ben was calling, but this was not the time to answer him. Peter was about to go down in history. So he declined the call and continued to type. "System ready for gene insertion," the projector told him in a female voice that sounded much nicer than Jarvis. The algorithm had formed a tiny patch under Peter's fingers he could symbolically insert into the formula. He pulled it around the holoprojector until he was standing next to Conners again.
"Ok, Check.", he told the projector and gave the little patch that expanded into a tube to the scientist. " See what I am trying to do?" Peter asked, but Conners remained silent as he started the simulation of a possible outcome. "Preempt the proteins?" he asked as it started, and Peter nodded. " Preempt the immune response." "Beginning trials," the ai said, and the mouse began to grow a fourth leg. " Pending...Pending..." Peter watched in expectation as code ran in the background, his arms crossed over his chest. "Failed. Subject deceased.", the ai concluded before starting another run. It automatically changed the code to find its sweet spot to make the algorithm work.
"Pending...Pending..." The tension was unbearable. This had to work. Peter was the living, breathing proof for that. "Pending...failed." "Come on, come on.", Peter cheered the machine on.
"Pending...Pending...Pending...failed. Subject deceased." Another fail. Peter sighed." Pending...pending...pending.. Peptide algorithm accepted.", the ai suddenly told them, and Peter nudged the doctor that had turned away in frustration. "Regrowth complete.", the ai added after a few more seconds, and a happy, healthy mouse hologram was looking at them, with four instead of three legs. It had worked. Peter's strategy had worked! " Vitals normal, blood pressure normal. Limp regeneration successful." the Ai confirmed their success.
"Extraordinary," Conners whispered. He was taken back by that key invention. Peter chuckled in disbelieve. Everything he had ever wanted to be had just come true. Today was his day. " Thank you." Conners fatherly placed a hand on his shoulder before being led off to another room. Two glass cages were standing on a metal table with two white mice.
"Meet Fred and Wilma, our three-legged mice.", Conners introduced them as Peter eyed the tiny creatures with pity. That was the part about science he didn't like. Conners grabbed Fred and placed him into the boy's hands. " Hey, buddy. I got you", Peter tried to calm the animal that panicked. Peter was sorry for him, especially when the doctor grabbed a syringe way too big for Fred, filled up with the cross-genetic activator.
"Careful, I don't want to stick you by mistake.", he warned Peter to hold still. Most likely, the serum wouldn't do anything to Peter. His DNA was already altered. But Conners didn't need to know that. Both of them chuckled nervously as the mouse was given the serum orally. With that, Peter could place him in his cage again.
Over his victory, Peter had forgotten entirely time. It was already dark as he arrived back home, his mood perfect. On his way back, while he skated the streets, he had called Liam through Jarvis and told him about the success. Liam had been proud, telling him over and over again what a magnificent mind he had and how much he would love to kiss him for every one of his wise words coming out of his mouth. Peter would like that. The butterflies in his stomach were running completely wild alongside the rush of scientific happiness.
Uncle Ben was waiting for him on the porch. " Hey," Peter greeted him happily. "I thought you..uh..." "Didn't you forget something?" Ben interrupted him while staring his nephew down. His phone rang, as Peter was about to grab it, Ben shook his head. " Don't answer that, but I'm glad to know it's working." Peter was confused. What was his uncle so angry about? "You owe your aunt an apology big-time. Be a man. Get in there and apologize!" Ben gestured through the open door, and Peter walked in his head low. He was supposed to pick up his aunt. He completely forgot. Too much had happened today. Peter ran a hand over his face in regret. "I'm sorry, Aunt May, I..." "Honestly, you don't have to apologize to me. It's your u-" May waved it off. " The hell he doesn't," Ben begged to differ very loudly.
"Ben," May shushed him. " I'm sorry I got distracted. I was at Oscorp." Peter tried to explain himself ." He got distracted." Ben was furious. "Your Aunt, my wife, had to walk 12 blocks alone in the middle of the night and then wait in a deserted subway station because you got distracted!" "Ben, sweetheart, honestly, I am completely capable of walking home by" May tried to make him stop. " You will not defend this boy!" Ben told her off. "I'm not defending..." "You are defending him! "he then turned to Peter again.
" Listen to me, son." Peter was getting angry himself. Angry for forgetting May, angry at Ben for not understanding and talking to his aunt like that. "Yeah, go ahead.", he told Benzhis voice firm. " You're a lot like your father. You are, Peter, and that's a good thing. But your father lived by a philosophy...a principle. He believed that if you could do good things for other people, you had a moral obligation to do those things. That's what's at stake here. Not choice.Responsibility." That little speech hit deep.
"That is nice. That's...that's great.", Peter mumbled, tears filling his eyes. " That's all well and good. So where is he?" Ben was puzzled. "What?" "Where is he?" Peter repeated." Where's my dad? He didn't think it was his responsibility to be here and tell me this himself?" "Oh, come on, how dare you?" Ben replied harshly. " How dare I? How dare you?!" Peter snapped. He looked at Ben for a moment, then turned to leave. He had to get out of here. This was too much.
"Where are you going?" Ben called after him. " Peter, come back here.Please." The glass door shattered as Peter closed it, leaving Peter to jump around in shock. But not for long. He turned again, continuing his walk out of there.
