chapter one → same light

" I can't look at you in the same light"

---

Calum woke up having a horrible headache, and couldn't remember anything after work except little flashes. The flashes were like fangs, and pitch black eyes.

What the hell.

But as soon as they came, they were gone and never came back. It was confusing.

Calum was also confused because he woke up on the couch, why wasn't he in his bed? When he sat up, all the blood rushed down from his head and Calum almost threw up. Why did he feel awful?

Stuck on his hand, Calum found a post-it note. The note said,

""Hey Calum,

You went to party tonight and got really drunk. You called me, so I came to pick you up. I also put you on the couch to sleep. ;-)

Love,
Thalia"

That bitch.

She knows he doesn't like her. Like, first Thalia choked one of his friends. If you really want Calum to not like you, don't mess with his friends. Second, she flirts with him when he tells her not to and is just plain annoying.

That makes Calum really not like Thalia.

Anyway, how did he even get her number? Cal never gave Thalia his, she was a creep. And when Thalia did give him hers, he never put it in his phone.

Calum grabbed his phone, which was on the coffee table. He opened the contact app up and sure enough, Thalia's contact was there. Calum deleted it.

Deciding he needed to clear his head, Calum called his friend Luke. He dialed the memorized number and waited for Luke to pick up.

"Hey Cal,"

"Hey penguin boy."

"Don't call me that. So what's up?"

"Nothing much, I just want to talk to you bout some stuff."

"Sure, sure. Go ahead."

Calum sighed. This was going to talk a while.

"Ok, where do I start? Um, so I was walking home after work eating sour patch kids."

"Is that all?"

"Um, apparently I went to a party too. I can't remember anything after that. I mean I have some flashes, but they're not the partying type."

Calum could basically picture Luke's confused face when he spoke.

"What type of flashes were they? Shouldn't they like bright lights and stuff?"

Calum sighed again and rubbed his forehead.

"I don't know man. All I remember is fangs and black eyes. It was creepy shit like that."

A bark rang through the phone.

"Luke? Was that Molly?"

"Um yeah, sorry. I - um, I got to go. Talk to you later."

"Yeah, I just needed to tell someone that, so thanks dude."

"Bye Cal."

"Bye."

Calum hung up and threw the phone on the parallel couch, only to stand up and get it. He checked the time and panicked. He was late for work, but Thalia worked at the restaurant too. It's such a great day already

Calum wondered why he didn't want to see Thalia more than usual. He didn't want to see her any day because Thalia always bothered him whenever she could.

Calum quickly went to go get dressed but discovered he was already wearing his uniform - black skinny jeans and a white dress shirt. Calum changed into another white dress shirt. He then brushed his teeth, fixed his hair, and put deodorant on.

Cal grabbed a coat and rushed to his car, pulling his keys out of the coat pocket.

---

As Calum got closer and closer to work, he felt nauseous. It was like every cell in his body was screaming for him to turn and run.

Cal got out of the car and ran into to employee room to grab his apron. He put on and tied it, and then turned around. He screamed a little bit.

Thalia was standing right behind him, smirking.

"What do you want Thalia?"

Thalia had this cocky look on her face and it nerved Calum. What's she doing?

"Nothing, just admiring the view."

Calum scowled, he was not in a good mood.

"Please just leave me alone, and stop flirting with me."

"Awe, why not? I bet you secretly love my company."

When Calum looked her in the eyes, he almost fainted. They were all black.

"Your eyes."

"Hmm? What about them?"

Thalia was practically purring. Ew.

"They're black."

"No they're not.. Are you okay Calum?"

Calum blinked.

Thalia's eyes were her normal dark brownish color. Maybe he was going crazy.

"Oh, um - yeah. Never mind. Now can you please leave me alone?"

Cal pushed past her and made his way to take orders and serve food. Thalia was so annoying, but hey, what's new?

Thalia gave Calum feelings - and not the "I like you so much please love me" or "you make me happy feelings." Nope. Whenever Calum was near her an undeniable sense of dread and fear coursed through him.

What the hell happened last night anyways?

Calum never felt more confused.

Calum has been drunk at multiple high school parties before and usually remembered most of it. He must have been hammered to not remember. Calum decided to forget about Thalia and everything that happened last night.

No way in hell would he let Thalia ruin the rest of his day.
