"What? How did you find out?" I stood there, confused as to when this had happened. How long had I been out?
"We were entering the first part of stage two of training, and we had to use a Nero serum to put them to sleep. A few resisted to take it, a few entered their fear landscapes and were awake at the SAME time," Max explained to me. I caught Eric looking at me, and I blushed.
"What did you do to them?" My worry was only growing.
Max chuckled, "By orders from Jeanine, we are supposed to kill them when we attack Abnegation. You are going to fight with us." I didn't want to fight, but orders were orders. But when I tried to nod, a voice in my mind said loud and clear, "DON'T JOIN THEM!" I put my hands over my ears for a few seconds.
"Can I have a week to think about it?" The question surprised me.
Max looked shocked. He looked to Eric, then to me, "Of course, Sierra. But no more and no less." With that, he walked away, leaving me alone with Eric.
"What the heck was that?!" Eric asked, sending me a glower.
"I, I don't know. I don't see anything wrong with these Initiates," I stuttered.
"A lot of Divergents killed your parents, Sierra!" I had forgotten about my encounter with Bram, and how he said that Jeanine was responsible for our parents' death. Lies.
"Just give me a week, Eric," I suddenly outburst. I got angry quick and easy.
"Fine, but if you come between me and the mission, I'll make sure that your future gets erased." And then he walked away...

"Fight like you mean it!" Eric paced around the ring where Tris was being pummeled by an Initiate named Will. All the rules had been changed to either 'fight harder' or 'until you can't continue.'
I rolled my eyes and watched as Will delivered a right hook to Tris's face. She yelped and suddenly spun around and punched Will in the jaw. He winced and slung his arm back. He hesitated, and then slap! Will slapped her!
Anger flooded my system and I tried to intervene, but someone's arm draped around my waist. I struggled against them, but their grip was too strong. I looked behind me and there was Eric, smirking as he carried me from the fight.
"He slapped her! Will slapped her!" My screams filled the Pit, and I kept trying to wiggle out of Eric's arms, but nothing would help. He was a lot stronger than me.
After a while, Eric's grip loosened and I felt the cool air of an air conditioner on my back.
"You're not supposed to interrupt the fights, Sierra," Eric said patiently, with slight annoyance in his voice.
"I couldn't just stand there and watch her get slapped, Eric." I peeked at his shoulder, and at the very end of his bone was a splash of blood. It expanded out toward his shoulder blade. It was a gun wound.
Eric shook his head, seeing my questioning stare. "It's nothing." But I knew better. I walked toward him and looked at the gun wound. I found my hand resting on his shoulder, my thumb gently running over the blood. A bandage was wrapped around it, but I knew that it still hurt Eric.
My pressed my lips to his, and melted. He put his uninjured arm around the curve of my back, and that's exactly how we stayed for the rest of the evening. . .

"I told you to stay away from her!" Jeanine shouted at Eric. "I thought you had more sense than to defy my orders!"
Eric swallowed, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down. He stuttered, trying to find the right words that would ease the situation that he got himself into.
"Jeanine, I-"
"Save it, Eric Neman. The next test is up and running, and she is ready. The last simulation that we conducted was successful, and now all we need is her exact aptitude," Jeanine explained to a pale Eric.
"You can't possibly believe that she'll ever be controlled," Eric snapped.
Jeanine countered, "No, but I can control you."
"And how are you going to do that?"
Jeanine gave a twisted smile. "With Sierra, of course."
