"You can't stop me, Eric. I've made my decision," I told him, slamming the door in his face. He didn't want me to take three-day trip to see my faction-less brother. But the Dauntless leaders had no idea that my brother, Bram, was faction-less. He would've chosen a faction last year, but he decided to join Evelyn Eaton, Four's mother. Four tried to keep his real name hidden, but he couldn't fool me.
*flashback*
The wind was blowing on the dead bodies of my parents. Their puddles of blood covered the area around them, and my breathing became heavy. Snow was falling down and my body heat wasn't doing much good. It seemed like my tears were frozen on my face, and it all seemed hopeless. I didn't have a clue as to how or why this happened to my parents, but one thing was for sure, they were brutally murdered. My mother, Christen Lemmings, had empty eye sockets and blood was pouring out of them like tears. My father, Roger Lemmings, had been stabbed four times in the chest and on his thighs. There was so much blood that I fainted.
The next morning though, I woke up in Erudite. I was only ten at the time, so therefore I was still naive and bawling for my mom and dad. But an hour later, I met the woman that took me in.
"Hello, Sierra. My name is Jeanine Matthews. I'm the Head of Erudite; I specialize in keeping our technology and information in line," she began. "I know that you've just witnessed a horrible epidemic. But I'm here to reassure you. Yesterday, when you went to visit your aunt, a clan of Rogue Divergent attacked your family. They tortured them for information. But your parents were noble enough to stand up for your faction, Dauntless. But I'm not here to try and ease your pain. I'm here to ask you something."
At ten years of age, I didn't want much responsibility. But I asked her anyway what she wanted.
And she told me: "I want you to stay in Dauntless, regardless of your aptitude test results. I need you to be willing to take a stand against the Divergent threat. Can you promise me that you will fight for us?" Before I gave her my answer, I asked what a Divergent was. She said that when I grew older, she would tell me. I kept thinking of the Divergent. They killed my parents, Jeanine said. And it angered me deep inside. So I told her, even though I was ten, "Jeanine, I promise that I will fight for my faction." She nodded, and I made a promise to myself. That I would avenge my parents if it was the last thing I did.

All my clothes were packed. I hadn't realized that I was crying until just now. I wiped them from my cheeks quickly when I stepped out into the narrow hallway. I kept a steady pace. Left, right, left, right.
"Hey, Sierra!" I heard someone call. I turned around. Eric. I didn't need this.
"Go away!" I yelled back, picking up my pace.
"No, you can't leave!" That was all it took to slow me stop. I spun around and glared at him.
"And why can't I?" My eyes boiled in their sockets. Eric came to a halt, catching his breath.
"You can't leave because we need you. I, I need you," Eric pleaded. I wanted SO badly to believe his words, but all he wanted was a show.
"Then prove it! You tried to kill me two times! Ever since I started working here, you've shown how much you hated me!" I screamed at him. My voice echoed through the halls, making the rock walls vibrate. I crossed my arms and stared at a breathless Eric. When I tried to look away, Eric grabbed my chin and turned my face to look up at him.
He leaned down and grazed his lips against mine. "What do I have to say to make you stay?" I looked right in his beautiful eyes. Tears were falling down my cheeks and the pain finally ceased.
