When my alarm goes off at six in the morning on Monday, I find myself more tired than I have been in a while. The answer as to why is simple.
The wolves.
The past few nights, I had been staying up in the chance to see the wolves again, to make sure they weren’t just a figment of my imagination. In the middle of the night I would jerk awake to the sound of them howling, sounding so close. But every time I ran to the glass wall to check, they would be gone.
I crawl out of bed and pick out my outfit; blue and white striped blouse, jean shorts, and silver heels. I curl my brown hair and put a silver bow in it to match my shoes and then I head down the two flights of stairs to the kitchen. My dad is sitting at one of the stools, drinking what could only be coffee. I give him a kiss on the cheek and grab his coffee from out of his hands, taking a sip for myself.
“Morning daddy.” I put his coffee back in front of him and look in the cupboards for something to eat. I find strawberry pop tarts and put two in the toaster.
“Morning Hot Rod.” He says with a smile. “If you want your own coffee there’s a fresh pot on the counter.”
I grab his coffee out of his hands again and take another sip. “Nah, I think I’m good.” I give his coffee back.
He grabs his coffee and hides it under the counter island from me. “Yeah, you better be good.” He says in a joking tone. “Take any more of mine and I might have to beat you.” He says with a chuckle.
I laugh and my mouth drops open. “Dad! That’s called child abuse, you can actually get arrested for something like that!”
He rolls his eyes and laugh. “Come on Rodney, you know that I’d never actually hit you.”
“I know, it’s fun to make you sound like a bad father though.” I stick my tongue out at him and grab my bag out from under the dining room table. “I got to go or I’ll be late for school.” I give him another kiss on the cheek. “Bye dad. I love you.”
He smiles, “Have a good day, I’ll be late coming home tonight so just make yourself dinner okay?”
I nod, “Sounds good. I have to help a friend with his math after school anyway.”
He raises an eyebrow and looks at me sternly. “His math? Rodney, I hope you’re being safe with your actions.”
I give a look of disgust. “Ugh, dad! I’m only helping him with his math, I promise!” Before he can say anything else, I head to the front door. “Bye!” I shout quickly before closing the door behind me a jogging to my car.
The trip to school seems short and very uneventful, not that you would expect anything to happen on the drive to school. But after pulling into the parking lot and getting out of my car, it’s a totally different story. Girls are whispering everywhere, looks of awe and swooning on almost all of their faces. Confused with what their talking about, I walk to one of the groups.
“...delinquents that escaped and left home to start new.” Jenny, a popular girl at Red Lake High, finishes saying to her group.
“Wouldn’t they be, like, dangerous or something then?” One of the girls, Megan, asks Jenny.
Jenny smirks. “Oh, totally. I heard that they carry around knives with them.”
A few of the girls gasp and put their hands on their chests. My confusion only getting frustrating, I speak up. “Hey Jenny, what are you guys talking about?”
Her mouth drops open in shock. “You haven’t heard?” When I shake my head, she puts her arm around me and leads me away from the group. “All the latest gossip is on one topic, well more like four sexy individuals that make the one topic.” She gives me a look that says that I should know exactly what she’s talking about even though she hasn’t really explained anything.
