Narrator's POV:
"Mira! Ah—What d-do we do!?" The chameleon screamed, head bobbing as the three began to get pulled into the rushing water. The boy leaned his body away from the current, kicking his burning legs, even more frantically. His grip on his sister tightened, as the other made unsuccessful attempts at pulling them out of the whirlpool. The waves seemed to intensify, crashing wildly against the whirling water walls and in turn breaking the through for mere seconds at a time. The two—conscious— Madrigal's were preoccupied with the task of staying afloat, which was seeming more and more difficult by the minute.
"MIRA!?" Camilo squealed, trying to wave his swimming arm to gain her attention only to be ignored and dunked under the swirling tide they have been swept in.
"Mira! Please!? Ple—please!" His cries fell on deaf ears as Mirabel's attention was captured by the pounding of rushing blood and the unnerving thumping of her heart. Broken whimpers left her mouth, followed by short, shakey breathes. But gargled, rough coughs beside her soon jostled her out of her mental crisis and she snapped her neck to look at the said person in shock.
"Dolores!" Mirabel cheered, her tears of angst whisking away with the waves and gusts of harsh wind. A broad grin, followed by a hefty chuckle arose from Mirabel as Dolores looked at her.
"Your—awake! O-h, thank Encanto!" Camilo sighed his voice hoarse from the excessive amounts of clear water and crisp wind that caused the conditions of his throat to worsen. He tries to inhale through his nose in a silly attempt of giving his throat a break, but with his head being carried under waves it was useless."What's going on? What happened?!" Dolores shrieked, looking to her both her brother and then to her cousin. Her breathing increased as she could feel the lack of floor beneath her and she panicked, she began kicking her legs in a frenzy and turn propelling herself away from the others.
"W-wait... Dolores!" The shapeshifter wheezed, making various attempts to swivel his body in the direction of his Hermana.
"Dolores!" He yelled. Camilo's body was pulled under and against harsh ripples in the water, his sopping wet, curly tendrils blinding his view as he got further away from the whines of his sister. His grunts of dismay and disquietude were overridden by the numerous other noises in the small, flooding room."We need to—need to stick together! Dolores!? Mirabel hollowed, as she tried to swim to Dolores against a harsh side current unaware of Camilo's lack of response. Being pulled and dragged off track from Dolores and being unable to see clearly, was a difficult goal to accomplish. But as the burning continued and the feeling of her muscles locking up intensified, she made an abrupt stop, muffled groans escaping her clenched jaw as she pushed through the pain, propelling her legs to keep her above the rising water. A motto repeating in her head continually,
'Don't stop swimming, if you stop you drown and if you drown, you won't be able to find Lucia or eat any more of Mamá's special arepas'
The only thing Mirabel was ignorant of was the ceiling that was closing in on the little room they had left. The only thing occupying her mind was her intense belief that she would someday taste her mother's cooking once more. She vowed she would stuff her face...if she could get out of here. One of the questions that lingered in the back of her mind, that she kept cramming down so she would not have to overthink and mull over the unknown answer.
Gargled gasps and spluttering caught Mirabel's interest as she focuses her attention back on the distant panicking Madrigal litres of water away from her. Dolores was panicked, her concentration directed to her moving limps and not being swept underneath the vicious, stormy waters.
"Dolores..." The brunette uttered, the only indication Mirabel had that it was Dolores and not another person—Camilo since he is the only other person in here—because of the wild tangles of inky hair that was held together, loosely, by a dishevelled red bow. The young 22-year-old woman looked dishevelled from what Mirabel could make out and the sudden pang of emotions crashed into her as she got taken under once again. Unprepared, like last time, she was stunned for a mere moment until the force of another wave kept pushing her in multiple directions. A sharp pain caused a tight-lipped groan to escape her mouth, bubbles accompanying it as she noticed that whatever she hit was stable enough and had enough strength to pull her back up to the surface.
"Mira-!" A sharp voice jolted her stinging, screwed eyes to squeak open for a single glance at her rescuer. When she saw dark skin and shoulders she recognised the voice was her cousin, Dolores."Mirabel!" The women whisper shouted again, grasping the 17-year-olds shirt gaining her eye contact and effectively calming some of the resurfaced fear from earlier when Mirabel was dragged beneath.
"Where— Where's Cami?" The dark-skinned female murmured, a thick silence clouding Dolores' mind as she held her breath for Mirabel's response."I'm over here!" A very shallow and sore sounding voice yelled in reply. To the sound of her brother's voice, Dolores seemed to relax as much as a person could who was in a near-death experience. Her worry was still sky high for all three of them, but especially for a person she seemingly lost for 2 minutes. She almost grinned as she saw her brother coming closer to the two of them... or maybe it was the two of them getting closer to him, without intentionally meaning to. Dolores concluded it was the strong pull of the current.
"You guys left me to drown! TOO DROWN, people!" And there went her worry as soon as her Hermano opened his loud and childish mouth.
"Some family you guys are-!" Camilo sulked but soon shut his mouth as soon as he felt a harsh dragging sensation around his lower half. He was not the only person to notice this, both Mirabel and Dolores could feel the change under the surface of the water, it unsettled them."What's going on...?" Camilo asked, unsure, as he could feel his body being dragged at a more extreme pace, he swallowed nervously chuckling to try and release some of his built-up tension.
"...Maybe this is—normal? Heh." He laughed, although the laugh was far from carefree and cheerful, more of a strict, unnerving snicker. Before any of the two women could comment, a hurried to inhale was heard before the red bowed women let out a shrill yelp, starting the others.
"Mirabel!" Her eyes pinned open as she tried to haul herself back and away from the massive combers (waves) that merged to form a singular, gigantic body of liquid.
"Ay Dios mío..." Camilo whimpered, green eyes bulging as he made a fatal attempt to scamper away from the now crashing wave.Mirabel couldn't make a squeak before she got crushed underneath the water, alongside her cousins. Water filled her mouth, burning her lungs and causing discomfort for her eye but that was disregarded as she could feel the searing pain of when the water smashed against her body. But aside from the agony of half or more of her body, she could feel the anxiety build up as she felt the water being pulled down, in one quick and hurried motion, yanking her to the depths despite her blatant protest.
As the dim, pale golden ceiling—the only place she thought was an air pocket for her and her cousins—got further away and as she was dragged to the ground, involuntarily. Her vision blured, her body growing tired and a constant tremor was evident in her hands.
