Chapter 8: Azure Lakis

A few hours had passed when Ehiara and Lanet were found by a passerby and his daughter. Ehiara was lying in a pool of blood. It was a miracle that she was still alive after all she had been through. Lanet, too, was lying on the ground in a bad state. The passerby and his daughter were stupefied by their findings.

Without deliberation, the passerby put down his cart and checked their pulse. He realised that Lanet and Ehiara were still breathing, albeit faintly. Thanking the gods that they were still alive despite their injuries, the man knew that there was no time for them to waste. "Seine!" The man yelled to his daughter, "Please load them onto the cart, NOW!"

[Two days later]

Two days later, Lanet regained consciousness. He found himself lying in an unknown place, not knowing where he was, or what time or date it was. Aware that danger might be lurking around the corner, Lanet tried to leave his room. He crawled out of his bed and forced himself to stand up by leaning against the wall.

"Where am I?" He wondered.

With every step that he took, the pain in his legs worsened. He remembered the battle that took place between Ehiara, himself and D. Sareus' commanders two days ago. "Ehiara..." He remembered in frustration and self-contempt, "I will never forget what those monsters did to you. If only I have the chance to meet them again! I will definitely set them straight."

Lanet studied his surroundings. As he walked towards the entrance of his room, he couldn't help but feel that his head was splitting into two. The smells, sensation and sights that he had experienced two days ago all came crashing back to him. The last thing he remembered was seeing Bear and Bull being blown away by the tempest and him pulling Ehiara and himself to the nearest tree. Lanet knew that he had to look for Ehiara as soon as possible. Something bad might have happened to her when he blacked out.

"Ehiara." He called out hoarsely, wondering whether she was inside the house. "Ehiara! Where are you?"

There was a guest room opposite his room. The guest room was open and a curtain was drawn over the entrance. Instinctively, Lanet sensed that there was somebody in there. Without thinking, he limped towards the guest room, clutching the wall for support as he pulled over the partition. Ehiara was sleeping in a makeshift ward. He sighed in relief. Although she was not in a critical condition, Lanet could tell that by the size of the gauze that she was badly injured.

"I'm sorry." Lanet apologised to Ehiara mentally, over and over.

Soon, Lanet was assailed by a series of footsteps. The presence of dangerous, unknown strangers in the house crept into his mind; he imagined that they were climbing up the stairs and closing in on him.

A lanky woman entered the room. "Oh! You have finally woken up. You shouldn't be moving around too much though; you are still injured as far as I can tell," she said. Happy that Lanet was finally awake, Seine went down to the kitchen to fetch the doctor. The doctor, who was dressed in a black coat, read Lanet's pulse and instructed Lanet to take some herbs under his watch. Even though Lanet was reluctant to take those herbs, he smiled sheepishly and nodded in agreement to him. Dr. Sear, who was the doctor of the Fayette family, was a very competent guy who knew how to perform operations.
