Kite slipped the Ring of Good Health onto Treeline's claws. The difference was easily noticeable. The gray film om his scales thinned and vanished. His eyes brightened and his scales felt cooler.

"Thanks Kite," he said, and his voice sounded clear and healthy. Kite could never tell him how she'd helped him, that was her secret to keep. He might pester and bother her, but if she told him, he would be so angry, even though she'd done it for him.

"I knew you'd be able to help," Avalanche replied, "but how?" A panting sound distracted them from Treeline's sudden recovery. A SandWing flew into the cave, flapping her wings as fast as she could. She was wearing a rusty helmet that was much too big on her and covered her face lopsidedly, but Kite would recognize her friend anywhere.

"Snake!" she shouted. She couldn't believe that Snake had come to visit her. "Do you-?"

"Kite! Kite! Blister plans to kill you, your brother, and you, Avalanche," Snake burst out.

"Why?" Avalanche asked, but Kite knew.

"To help you, Treeline, I made a deal with Blister. I helped her rob her mother's treasury, but she went behind my back and used me to help her kill Oasis. She probably wants to get rid of me so nobody will ever know what she did," Kite explained reluctantly. "She's also worried I told you two my story."

"Really?" Treeline asked. "You should never have done that." He glared at his sister, the anger plainly visible in his eyes.

"I know, I made a terrible choice, and given the chance, I'd find another way to heal you, but I did it," Kite sighed, "and we have to face the consequences of my actions."

"There's only one thing we can do," Snake whispered. "The four of us have to run away to the Scorpion Den."

"Why you?" Kite asked.

"Blister knows I went to warn you," Snake explained. There was no time to argue with her. If Snake needed or wanted to come along, Kite didn't have time to try to change her mind.

And then the four dragons, in danger from a certain SandWing, flew off to the one place that they might be safe.
