"How lucky of me that you came to see me. Could you not keep me out of your mind?"
You felt the hairs on the back of your neck stand up as a chill went down your spine. You didn't need to turn around to know the identity of the person behind you, but you felt your body slowly turn on its own to face the scarred man that now stood inches away from you.
Your thoughts started racing wildly, trying to figure out what to say. Obviously Dabi knew that you and Hawks were acquainted in some way, but you weren't sure what else he knew. Should you play it off that you were just trying to fulfill the mission that Shigaraki had given to kill Hawks, or did he already know that you were working for Hawks? You knew that the wrong statement could make things go very badly for you and that help would be at least 10 minutes away even at the speed that Hawks could fly. And that would also be dependent on if Hawks was even listening to what was being said at that moment.
You thought about what the best course of action would be. If you really needed to, you could always use your quirk, but you knew that it was very likely that you would get hurt in the process. When you had sparred with fellow students in high school, you figured out very quickly that you didn't fare well against people with fire quirks because you had to have a direct touch with the person in order for your quirk to even work. It's near impossible to hold onto something flaming and not hurt yourself in the process. Even if you tried your best, the natural reaction of your body was to let go of something thar was hurting you. For right now, at least, you felt it was best to just stall for time until Hawks could reach you.
You tried to think of the best answer that would not give away your alliance, but before you could even answer, Dabi closed the distance between you and ran the back of his hand along your face as a smirk spread across his face. His turquoise eyes gazed sharply into your eyes before squinting slightly. You couldn't tell if he was suspicious of you or thinking something else entirely. After a few moments, his eyes wandered down, first falling onto your lips for a brief moment before continuing down and to land onto the feather that was tied around your neck.
He slowly picked up the feather, twirling it in his hand once before he spoke into it as if he were speaking to Hawks directly, "I'm sure you are busy with the present that I left for you. But don't worry, I will take good care of y/n."
As soon as the last word was out of his mouth, he used his quirk and the feather quickly was turned into nothing but ashes.
"I think we need to have a little talk, y/n," he said in a low voice as he leaned into you. You could feel his hot breath on your neck, and you braced yourself for him to do more, but after a brief moment, he continued, "...but I don't want us to be interuppted by a chatty little bird."
He took your hand and pulled you towards the front door until he felt your resistance to being taken elsewhere. Your lips pursed slightly as you thought about what you could do without getting severely hurt but without having to leave the bland apartment. Dabi must have noticed the shift in your expression and leaned into you, "I won't hurt you if you come along willingly. But you shouldn't test my patience. Even if you are the love of my life, doesn't mean that I won't hurt you if you resist."
You begrudgingly followed behind him, trying to stay alert on where you were going. As you went onto the street, you were hoping that you would see anyone at all, but as you were lead further away from the apartment, you gave up hope of seeing someone else as your surroundings looked more run down and less likely to be populated.
I need to find a way to send a message to Hawks.
Several minutes after leaving the apartment, Dabi turned down a secluded alleyway. That's when a plan came to you. It was a risky move, and it had a very low chance of working, but it was better than doing nothing at all.
With your one free hand, you pressed your thumb up against your ring finger to loosen the ring and let it fall from your finger. You hoped that Dabi wouldn't hear the faint clink as the ring fell to the pavement and rolled. So instead of looking back to see where the ring hand landed, you kept your eyes glued to his face to see his reaction. His expression didn't falter in any way and you just hoped that the ring had landed in a place where it could be easily be seen if someone were looking for it.
Plus dropping the ring helped you in two ways, not only did it give Hawks an indication of the direction you were headed, but it also meant the Dabi would not see the ring and question you about it. On the off chance that he didn't know the relationship between you and Hawks, you might just be able to stall Dabi for longer.
As you walked down the alleyway, you hoped that the final location was very close by and breathed a sign of relief when he quickly ducked into a door a brief time later.
You weren't sure what you were expecting when you passed through the door from the alley, but as you looked around at your surroundings, you were very surprised. The room had an open flooring plan with a couch and a kitchenette. There was also a bed off in the corner and a door that lead to what you assumed was a bathroom. What surprised you most was how clean it was, it was a stark contrast to the dirty alley just on the other side of the door. That's when you noticed it. A pair of shackles that was bolted to the far wall.
