Chapter five.
I was raking into leaves into the burning fire in the middle of the yard while sweat was pouring down my face and down my shirtless back. I could feel my skin burning up by the sun even through the suntan lotion. I waked the last pile of leaves into the fire and watch the brown leaves turn into white ash leaving behind red-hot embers. I saw the yellow and orange flame rise higher devouring the dry leaves like a chubby kid eating his favorite meal. Once the flames were back down I grabbed all the vines that I chopped down and tossed them into the fire and WHOOSH the flames rose higher enveloping the dry vines quick and turning them in to ashes in mere minutes. I heard the phone rang in the distance and realized that it was my phone. I walked inside and took the black phone from its cradle and looked at the caller ID. 'RedRose Elem' was showing on the screen.
I hit 'TALK' "Hello," I said concerned.
"Hey dad," Gio's cheerful voice said.
"Hey hun, is everything alright?" I asked.
"Yeah, I was just wondering if I could ride the bus home, I’d be with
Kyle," he said sounding hopeful.
I let out a sigh, "Alright, but be careful I'll be watching you."
"Alright! Thanks daddy," he said with glee. "Come on Gio the buses are waiting," I heard a voice in the background.
"I got to go, Love you, dad." he said and hung up.
I smiled and shook my head and I walked into the kitchen and filled me up a glass of tap water and drank it in several gulps. I looked out the window to see the fire was reduced to embers and there is nothing left but black and white ashes. The yard look bare and devoid of life, but I can change that.
Ding dong, the doorbell rang and I grabbed a white t-shirt and yelled out,
"Just a minute!"
I put on the t-shirt and walked to the door and opened it to see the UPS deliveryman holding a small package.
"Does a Steve Tyson used to reside here?" the young man asked.
"Yes," I said uncertain.
“They told me that he has passed so, I was also told to deliver this package anyway. So if you would sign here please,” the UPS guy urged.
I grabbed the small machine and sighed my name and he handed me the package.
“Have a good day,” he said and turned on his heels and walked to his big truck.
I closed the door and set the box on the table, curiosity bubbled up in my mind.
Who is Steven Tyson and what is Trevor’s connection to him? I thought.
I heard honking and I looked out the small window adjacent to the door to see a big bus stopping in front of my house. I opened the door and waited in the doorway. I saw Kyle stepping out and then Gio following him. They stood at the sidewalk for a moment talking and then they separated, Kyle crossing the street to his house and Giovannie was jogging up the driveway smiling.
“Hey hun,” I greeted as he walked to the door. I stepped aside to let him in. “Let me take your backpack.”
Giovannie handed me backpack and ran into to kitchen.
“No running,” I said after him.
I heard the refrigerator open and then it slammed shut then I heard the rattle of the silverware when the drawer they reside in was pulled out.
