Ok. The plan is going to start in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, I think. Here I go. I take a deep breath and say to Claire, "Hey, it's my birthday tomorrow. If you wanna come to my place around 6, we're having a big bash. I just don't want any presents though."
Claire looked at me like I'd just sprouted two more heads.
"What's the matter?" I say.
"It's just-you're the first person to invite me to a party all year! Yeah, I'll definitely come!" she says, trying to recover but still looking slightly baffled.
"Great!" I say. Now for more lying. "Hold on, I've got to go to the bathroom."
"Ok." says Claire. Secretly, I walk to the other cafeteria, where Chase, Nicole, Sabina, and the kid who plays the bass sit.
First, I head toward Sabina's table.
"Hey, Sabina, could I talk to you for a second?" I say.Sabina looks puzzled, but says okay. I tell her the same thing I told Claire, my address, and my phone number. She accepts the invitation and sits back down. Same thing goes with Chase and the bass kid (who's name is Matthew, I asked). They both said yes.
Now for the last one. Nicole. I'm building up some nerve to ask her to my party, I think as I walk towards her table. Nicole's friends immediately turn around and whisper to one another, but I keep my focus on Nicole.
"Um, Nicole? Can I talk to you for a second?" I say, but not as confidently as I'd said to Claire, Chase, Sabina and Matthew.
"Uh... Okay?" Nicole shrugged. The other girls were whispering on rapid fire now. "Guys, stop," Nicole says, and the whispering comes to a complete halt.
"Sorry about them," Nicole says, gesturing over to her friends. "They can be a nuisance sometimes."
"It's okay," I say, surprised at how nice Nicole is about all this. "Anyway, I wanted to ask you.."
I tell Nicole the same thing as I'd said to the others. Only this time, Nicole sits in silence and stares into space.
"Um... Nicole?" I say, starting to get worried.
"What? Oh, I was just thinking. I'm pretty sure I can come. Leia, right?" she says, snapping out of her little trance.
"Yep," I say.
"Well, see you tomorrow, I guess," Nicole says, heading back to her table.
"See ya!" I call back.
Phew! That's finally over! I think that was the most awkward conversation I've ever had! And to think I'd thought she might've say no!
Well, now my plan is fully running. My idea might blossom if this "party" goes right. If it doesn't, well, we might be doomed and never form a band.
