Marley POV
We had five minutes till we had to go on. I had gotten into a different costume, a black, tight top with open shoulders and black disco pants with a belt. My hair was curled and in a high ponytail. I see Ryder and walk up to my leading man, who I've secretly been having a crush on since he started Glee Club.
"Whoa. I-I mean... Whoa."
"Are you sure?" I smile timidly, showing off my outfit. "It's... This doesn't look ridiculous?"
"Not the word that comes to mind."
"It's just so tight." It's not like I want to tell him this, but I want him to know. It's complicated. "I feel like I'm gonna shake out of the seams in the Shake Shack.
"You have nothing to worry about, you're gonna destroy this."
I look at him hopefully. He's so nice. If he was, even remotely into me, I wonder why. He did make a little cheeky indirect, unofficial promise about romance after the show.
"You know who's going to destroy us y'all." Kitty walking up to us in her prim little costume (that doesn't look tight at all) interrupts my train of thought. "Fletcher Mantini. He's in the audience."
Huh? "Who's that?" I ask, exchanging looks with the also confused Ryder.
"He's a theater critic for the McKinley Muckraker. He hates everything. His brutal deconstruction of your performance is gonna be posted online before you're even forklifted out of your costume." Kitty elaborates. Oh God. What am I going to do? I'm gonna die up there of nervousness. And there's someone who will critique my every move?
"See ya on the ice!" She turns around and with a whoosh of her blonde, intimidating ponytail, she leaves.
Ryder starts to walk away, but sees my involuntary scared face and comes back. "You can't listen to her."
"I know. It's just, just, just..."
"Hey, hey, hey. Look at me."
I follow his command and look deeply into his chocolatey brown eyes.
"Take a deep breath."
I breathe.
"You look amazing." I smile. "You sound amazing","he continues. "This is going to be amazing."
He takes my face into his hands to bring it up to his face. He kisses me. Suddenly all my nervousness flies away as Kitty's ponytail did and I find new found confidence in me.
The show is about to start. He walks up, looking to the audience. Shaking his hands, and moving his legs strategically, he starts to sing. "I got chills, they're multiplyin'. And I'm loooosin' controoooolll." He takes his sweater off, his eyes still on me as he has the in his hands. "'Cause the power, you're supplyin'," he rotates his hands with the semester in beat with his pelvis moving in a circular motion and throws his sweater back. "It's electrofyin'," he jumps towards me.
"Better shape up, 'cause I need a man, and my heart is set on yooouu." I point and walk to him. "You better shape uuuppp, you better understand," he puts his hand on my hips as we sway to the fast beat. "To my heart I must be truuee."
"Nothin' left, nothin' left for me to do." He sings.
We break out into the chorus. "You're the one that I want."
"You are the one I want," chimes in the rest of the group. "Hoo hoo hoo, honey."
"You're the one that I want."
We continue the rest of the song in a blur.
But even when I don't remember all of it, I know we were incredible.
