Percy's POV
There is some good news, and some bad news. Which would you like to hear first? The good news? Well, we didn't have to choose where to go. It was completely straight. The bad news? We went straight into a dead end, with a boulder blocking the way.
"This feels like a dungeon," Red whispered to Green, who nodded.
"So, should we blow the boulder apart?" Blue questioned.
"It might effect the walls." Vio answered, "Normally, it doesn't, but we don't know how it will. Tyson- can you move it instead?"
Tyson nodded, moving it with so much energy that everything rumbled for a moment. It opened, and we rushed inside.
"Close it behind us!" Annabeth said, and Tyson rolled it back quickly.
"We trapped it," I said.
"Or trapped ourselves," Grover said.
I turned. We were in a twenty-foot-square cement room and the oppositewall was covered with metal bars. We'd tunneled straight into a cell.
"What in Hades?" Annabeth tugged on the bars.
They didn't budge.Through the bars we could see rows of cells in a ring around a darkcourtyard- at least three stories of metal doors and metal catwalks.
"A prison," I said.
"Thanks, Captian Obvious," Vio sighed.
"Shh," said Grover. "Listen."
Somewhere above us, deep sobbing echoed through the building. Therewas another sound, too- a raspy voice muttering something that I couldn'tmake out. The words were strange, like rocks in a tumbler.
"What's that language?" I whispered.
Vio frowned, looking almost confused. It's an expression that was never seen on his face before. He looked at the other colours. They nodded, sharing confused expressions.
"What?" I asked.
"We just don't know what it is," Red answered.
Was it a lie? They did look confused.
Tyson's eye widened. "Can't be."
"What?" I asked again.
He grabbed two bars on our cell door and bent them wide enough for evena Cyclops to slip through.
"Wait!" Grover called.
But Tyson wasn't about to wait. We ran after him. The prison was dark, only a few dim fluorescent lights flickering above.
"I know this place," Annabeth told us. "This is Alcatraz."
"You mean that island is near San Francisco?"She nodded. "My school took a field trip here. It's like a museum."
It didn't seem possible that we could've popped out of the Labyrinth onthe other side of the country, but Annabeth had been living in San Franciscoall year, keeping an eye on Mount Tamalpais just across the bay. Sheprobably knew what she was talking about.
"We should stop-," Green warned.
But Tyson kept going. Blue, closest to him, pulled him back quickly.
"Stop, Tyson!" he whispered. "Can't you see it?"
I looked where he was pointing, and my stomach did a somersault. On thesecond-floor balcony, across the courtyard, was a monster more horriblethan anything I'd ever seen before. Red winced at the sight. I could tell why- it was a monstrosity.
