Giada
Instead of replying, the man snorts. After a few seconds of laughing, he seems to notice I'm not joking and pulls himself together. Then he stares at me for way too long before shaking his head to himself and turning around to walk out of my line of sight.
I hear him pace a few steps before he comes back to his original spot.
"Ask me again," he tells me blankly.
"What's your name?" I ask slowly, more unsure this time. He's confusing me with his sudden change in behavior. He seemed so cute and funny a moment ago whereas now he's completely serious and distant.
He doesn't give off rude vibes, it's not that. He just, I don't know, went more professional.
"I'm Leo Jones," he finally tells me. "Right, either way, you have water and food. Let me know if you need anything else." He goes to leave but I stop him.
"How am I supposed to let you know if that's the case. I can't really stand up to get you, so, do you want me to yell until someone complains or," I trail off, waiting for his reply.
"Right, my bad. Here you go." He digs something out of his pocket and is back at my side with a few determined strides. He hands me a black plastic circle thingy with a button on top so I do the only reasonable thing.
I press the button.
A pink light on the man's wristband turns on with a ding.
"Good demonstration. I still want to mention that I am a busy man and that is no toy, okay? Press it in emergencies only," he insists. I can't help it, I roll my eyes.
"If you have so much on your plate already then why are you my babysitter. Why not just give someone else the job? Those three ladies that bathed me, for example. I really feel like they'd love the job. We had a connection," I joke before I catch myself.
That's right. I just made a joke.
My whole body is aching, my brain is still messed up and emotionally I'm a disaster but here I am. Making jokes.
It felt like the right thing to do, somehow. Maybe it's the medicine I'm on or Leo just has that effect but somehow, I'm in the mood for fun and games.
Someone should sedate me.
"I'm afraid that's not an option. Now, if we're done here." Once again, the guard attempts to leave.
The only problem is I can't seem to let him go. Don't want him to leave, somehow, and I hate how eager he is to flee my cell.
I am too, of course, so I don't blame him. It's just the thought of him actually being able to do it and not me that bugs me.
"What if I need to use the bathroom? Or if something itches?" I ask. No matter how stupid it sounds, those are some of my concerns. Like right now, my left elbow itches terribly beneath the gauze and I can't move to scratch it.
"You figure something out. There's the bathroom," he tells me politely enough, pointing in the direction of the second door in the room.
"I can't get there by myself," I simply state, trying to sound tougher than I feel. I hate being dependent.
Leo Jones studies me again, his expression passive but his eyes seem almost sympathetic.
"Okay, I'll get you a nurse for basic tasks. If anything goes wrong, say, someone sneaks into your room or tries to kidnap you, you press my button, understand?"
I bite lip and nod slowly. God, I must seem so pathetic to all of them. Stupid little Giada, thinks no one knows her real name, trusts a psychopath blindly, and almost gets herself killed. Now she can't even go to the bathroom by herself.
"Good. I'll see you when it's time for your next meal." With that, the man leaves.
Too late does my stomach growl since I just now notice how far away my food is placed. Yeah, there's no way I'll be able to reach that.
I stare at the steaming plate of pasta on the desk at the wall, breathing in the mouthwatering scent of it until I can't take it anymore. I drag my eyes away and begin shimmying into a laying position.
I'm tired and there's absolutely nothing I can do. Might as well get some more rest.
-
I wake up to raise voices.
"I hate you!" someone says from outside my cell. That quickly snaps my brain to attention. I recognize that voice. Vincenzo.
He's in front of my cell and obviously sounds pissed off. That's bound to wake me up.
I distantly hear another voice but the words aren't clear enough for me to understand. Only Enzo seems to be loud enough to sound as if he's right next to me even when he's on the other side of a door.
"You're the absolute worst!" he snaps but what really surprises me is what comes after. A booming laugh.
At first, I'm convinced my ears are playing a trick on me but then I recognize Leo's snort. So it's true. The two of them are actually laughing.
Against my will, the thought settles something within me and a warm feeling creeps in my veins.
Right now, I'm not hearing a monster.
I'm listening to a very human man.
