In a rare moment of vulnerability, Natasha Romanoff shows Steve Rogers a side of her that he hadn't seen before. When she is unexpectedly rejected, she tries to drink her sorrows away, but Steve comes to her rescue. She fails to realize the miscommunication between them, and he is only concerned with showing her just how much she means to him.

Natasha Romanoff was drunk.

Not the tipsy, giggly buzz but the blackout - fuck me - I fucked up, drunk she was certainly going to regret in the morning. Usually, she would never go this far but surrounded by her teammates at Maria's birthday party, she felt safe enough to just let go. Thor and Tony were probably even drunker than her on the verge of passing out, so at least she wasn't that drunk...

It was really all Steve Rogers' fault.

She could hardly see straight as she danced at the bar and drank the drinks random men bought for her until Steve stepped in and told her that was enough.

If he wouldn't have blatantly rejected her, she wouldn't be trying to forget the whole situation from earlier that day...

She tried to push him away as he guided her to a barstool and ordered a glass of water but as soon as he leaned over her and she smelled his intoxicating cologne as well as something that was entirely Steve, she waved her white flag in surrender. Dropping her head in her hands as the world spun around her, she nearly fell off the stool before Steve steadied her with one hand on her waist and the other on her lower back. Through her tight tee-shirt and skinny jeans, she felt the warmth of his body when he didn't step away.

"Why don't we get you home?" Steve said in her ear over the loud, booming music. His breath ghosted across her skin, and she shuddered deliciously.

"I don't want to go home." She groaned. She looked up at him through her eyelashes, and he reached out to brush a strand of her hair behind her ear.

She almost forgot his rejection... almost.

"Is she okay?" Sam asked, seemingly shattering the moment between them as he came from the dance floor where Wanda and Maria were.

"I'm fine." She whined, rolling her eyes. She realized she was leaning against Steve to steady herself and straightened quickly. "I want to dance." She then said, stumbling to her feet. This time, it was Sam who caught her as her knees almost buckled from underneath her.

"Drink this first." Steve shook his head, pushing a glass of water into her hand.

She glared up at him, considering the implications if she tossed the water at him. He would certainly be angry with her, but it would be worth the sight of his shirt sticking to his muscles. However, he gave her the look, that stupid, puppy-dog look with pleading, azure eyes, and she was hook, line, and sinker. Carefully and slowly downing the water, she set the glass on the bar before turning away from the men to join Maria and Wanda on the dance floor.
