Set in the 1940s, Natasha Romanoff is a Red Room agent assigned the task of infiltrating Germany during WWII. When things go haywire, her life is saved by none other than Captain America. She begins to question everything she thought she knew about the war as well as everything she thought she knew about life, love, and who she fights for.

Natasha Romanov had heard about the scientific anomaly that was Steve Rogers... Captain America. She was sure everyone around the world heard about the man who couldn't make it as an actual soldier - turned 'super-soldier.' He was jacked with muscles but quite frankly had zero combat skills. The mastermind scientist behind it all was dead and the formula apparently died with him. However, that didn't deter governments and private sectors from trying to replicate the serum, even if it was to no avail.
Natasha, well, she didn't understand the hype behind 'super-soldiers.' What good was a muscular body without an adept brain? Steve Rogers was a mere show pony pretending to be someone he wasn't. More than once, he'd shown his inadequacy on the battlefield, and she was truly surprised he hadn't already been killed by his poor decision-making skills. He should've just stuck to the stage surrounded by showgirls.
He certainly fit in.
The Red Room had no interest in 'super-soldiers' or such mad-scientific experiments. They already mastered the art of producing world-class spies and assassins. Natasha was a blurred line between both, trained as a spy to bring down regimes from within and also trained as an assassin to shoot the perfect kill-shot from a mile away. She was the delicate balance of hardened emotions, careful manipulation, and tactile fighting Steve Rogers' couldn't even fathom. Her generation of Black Widows were the poster prodigy for the future because they were the perfect weapon used to start and end wars.
No... the Red Room didn't want anything to do with super-soldiers.
Her assignment in Germany was purely political.
It was a simple task, one she could do with her eyes closed and maybe even her hands tied behind her back. All she needed to do was infiltrate Germany undetected and disrupt America's attack against Hydra. The Red Room had previously been associated with Hydra until their ambitions became even greater. Now, they just wanted to get their hands on the rest of Hydra's technology before entirely obliterating the organization. If America got to Hydra first... well everyone knew what would happen if an agent failed to complete a mission. Her assignment wasn't necessarily to assassinate Captain America, but she knew it would be an added bonus if she did...
She was certainly going to make her handlers proud.
Germany was a beautiful country despite being rather cold. Even though Natasha grew up in the tundras of the Soviet Union, she much preferred sunshine and a view of the beach she so rarely got to see. However, the views of the snow-topped, rolling mountain ranges and quaint villages would suffice for the time being. Wearing a thick trench coat and warm boats, she brushed the snow off her shoulders and stepped into the lobby of the cozy inn she booked for the night. The old man at the desk peered up at her from behind his glasses and Natasha smiled, mustering a thick German accent as she spoke fluently in the language and confirmed her stay. She didn't linger for pleasant conversation after receiving her key, hooking her bag higher up her shoulder and making her way to her room on the first floor. The ground floor always made for an easy escape.
