                                         Chapter 2
                                          Reckless

Richard stood by the table in the breakroom, sipping the coffee he had made while Gavin seemed to be watching everyone else at the PD. Richard glanced at Gavin, then at his phone. "When did you deviate?" He asked, curious and whispering. "I deviated while they were leading me to the PD." Gavin responded. "Is there a reason why?" Richard asked, looking at Gavin. Gavin shrugged. "I couldn't tell you." He said, redirecting his eyes to Richard's coffee. "Was it some kind of error or something?" Richard continued to ask his questions. "Detective, I don't have any answers." Gavin said, looking at Richard. Richard looked away, grabbing his phone and opening up some social media app. He sipped his coffee while scrolling through the app. Gavin watched the coffee as he processed the dark liquid in Richard's mug. They were both snapped back into reality when someone else entered the breakroom. Richard looked up to see Connor and his android, Hank, following him. Gavin watched the other android and Connor, scanning them both. "Hey, Atwood!" Connor said as he walked over to Richard and Gavin. "Hello, Connor." Richard responded, looking back at his phone. Connor stopped in his tracks, looking at the new android in front of him. "I'm guessing this is your android?" Connor asked, looking at Richard. "Sadly." Richard joked. Gavin looked at Richard, giving him a secretive glare before going back to pretending to be a machine. "Come on, don't be like that. They're not all that bad." Conner said as he walked to the other side of Richard, standing beside him. Gavin and Hank looked at each other before starting to greet each other and talk. "How was the first patrol with your new android?" Connor asked. Richard looked over at Gavin, remembering the conversation they had yesterday. "Good, I guess. We obviously didn't find anything worth investigating." He responded, still watching Gavin. "Well, you have to patrol again. Maybe this time you'll find something." Connor said, starting to move away from Richard. "Well, wait." Richard said as he stood up straight, turning to talk to Connor. Connor stopped walking and turned to listen to Richard. "We didn't find anything, but Gavin did bring up something that we should probably look into." Richard spoke. Connor continued to listen. Gavin glanced at Richard and Connor before turning back to Hank. "He brought up the idea of the guy we're after possibly being an android. Maybe we should check for that too, if possible." Richard said. Connor thought for a second. While they talked about the possibility and what they could do to figure out if that was the case, Gavin stood in front of Hank, covering him from their sight. He held out his hand for Hank to take, Hank looking at it then at Gavin. "I gathered information on patrol that might be useful." Gavin lied. Hank took Gavin's hand, the fake skin slowly fading away, revealing the plastic white underneath. Once Gavin could, he started to take over Hank, slowly pulling him into deviation. Hank's LED swirled to red, starting to flash that color. Hank tried to fight it, but being caught off guard made it more difficult to fight it. Soon, Gavin and Hank let go of each other's arms. Hank was looking around confused. "You need to keep this secret?" Gavin asked Hank, whispering. Hank took a second to process everything before his LED swirled into yellow. He nodded. "Hank, come on!" Connor called for him. Hank looked over at Connor. "Coming, Lieutenant." He responded before following Connor out of the breakroom. Gavin walked back over to Richard. Richard grabbed his coffee. "I'm surprised Hank didn't figure out you were a deviant or something." He whispered. "No, he knows. I just managed to convince him to keep it secret." Gavin responded. "Wait, how?" Richard asked. Gavin ignored him, heading back to their desk. "Ga-" Richard sighed and started to follow him. "Gavin, what do you mean you convinced him?" He whispered as they walked towards the desk. "I just convinced him! Don't worry about it!" Gavin whispered back. "No, I will worry about it because that is Connor's android, not just some random android, the Lieutenant's android!" Richard whisper-yelled. Gavin turned to face Richard, both of them looking into each other's eyes. "Detective, It's fine. I'll tell you later." Gavin said. Richard sighed before sitting down in the chair. He glanced at Gavin, then at his computer. "I'm trusting you." He said before starting to bring up the work he had to do. Gavin leaned against the desk, looking at the computer. While Richard worked, Gavin slowly started to look Richard up and down before turning slightly to look at Hank, who turned to look at Gavin. They both looked away from each other before Gavin connected to Hank, talking in a way humans would call telepathy. "Are you doing okay?" He asked. "A little confused, but I'm fine." Hank responded. "If you need something, just say you're coming to transfer information to me." Gavin said. "Got it." Hank agreed. They stopped talking to each other. Gavin started to scan everyone else in the room. He looked around at all the officers and androids. The thought that he could deviate all of them with the help of Hank was tempting, but obviously, doing that wouldn't be a good idea. Right now, at least. "Me and Connor were talking about what you said, about the guy possibly being an android." Richard spoke, causing Gavin to quickly redirect his attention to him. Richard looked up at Gavin. "He and Hank are going to go through other evidence they have on the man while you and I are out on patrol. Hopefully, while we're out there, we can find something worthwhile. Even better if we bump into him." He continued. "Sounds good to me." Gavin responded. "If we do bump into him though, you're still going to have to act like a machine. Okay?" Richard said. "Okay." Gavin responded, rolling his eyes. Richard watched Gavin for a bit before sighing and turning back to his computer.

Richard and Gavin walked along the streets of the city, once again on patrol. Gavin seemed to scan any spot he could, searching for anything they could use for the case. Richard searched too, until his mind started to wander a bit. "How did you convince Hank?" He asked suddenly. Gavin looked at Richard and then back ahead of himself. "I deviated him." He said. "What?!" Richard yelled, stopping in his tracks before realizing they were out in public. He continued following Gavin. "You deviated him?!" He whisper-yelled. "Yes?" Gavin looked at him, not picking up on how bad that could be. "Gavin, you-" Richard took a breath, trying to calm himself a bit. "Gavin, I need you to listen to me for a moment." He said, stopping in his tracks. Gavin stopped walking too, looking at Richard. "You can't just deviate random androids like that!" Richard started to lecture him. Gavin gave him a look that said "I don't care." Richard continued to lecture him, explaining how bad of an idea it was. "Okay, you know what? Gavin, let's set some rules, okay?" He said, trying to calm himself. "Okay." Gavin responded, willing to listen but probably not going to obey the rules. "First rule: don't go around deviating random androids!" Richard began. "Second rule: stay by my side. Don't wander off without me knowing!" He continued. "Lastly, for the love of God, don't get us caught! That means, don't be reckless!" He finished. "Do I make myself clear?" He asked. Gavin stared at him for a moment before speaking. "Okay." He finally spoke. "Okay." Richard let out a sigh of relief. "But just because I'm saying okay doesn't mean I'll obey." Gavin said. "Gavin." Richard said, starting to get tense again. "You telling me not to just makes me want to do it more just to piss you off." Gavin explained. "Break any of those rules and I'll send you back to Cyberlife to be scrapped for parts. Got it?" Richard said. Gavin rolled his eyes. "Fine." He said, giving in. "Are you actually going to listen?" Richard asked. "No." Gavin chuckled before continuing to walk down the street. "God, it's like taking care of a humanized cat." Richard said to himself before following Gavin. Gavin continued to search the area until he noticed a girl setting up posters on a pole. He stopped walking, waiting for her to leave. Once she started to walk away, looking upset, he hurried across the street towards the poster. Richard noticed him run off. He breathed in before following him across the street. Gavin grabbed the poster and read it. "A lost cat." He said, showing Richard the poster. Richard read the poster. "That's sad, but I don't know what that has to do with anything." He said. "Can we look for the cat?" Gavin asked. "No, Gav. We have a serious case to do. Put the poster back and come on." Richard responded, starting to walk off. "Did you just call me Gav?" Gavin asked, causing Richard to stop in his tracks. "If we look for the cat, will you never bring that up again?" Richard asked. Gavin thought for a second before smirking. "Deal." He said. "Okay, come on, let's look for the cat. What's its name?" Richard asked as Gavin caught up with him. "Lynx!" Gavin said, looking at the poster. Richard nodded. "I can't believe I'm searching for a cat now." He thought to himself, walking along the streets. The picture of the cat on the poster showed this really pretty grey cat with yellow eyes. Gavin hopped up onto a street lamp, causing Richard to stop and look up at him. Gavin scanned the area for the cat until he saw a small grey figure hiding in an alley. He hopped down from the street lamp, hurrying over to the cat. Richard watched him, impressed at how well he balanced on the street lamp and how easily he hopped onto it and ofg it. Gavin picked up the cat and looked at it. All the features seemed to match the ones on the poster. He held the cat close, hurrying back over to Richard. "That was easy!" Gavin said, petting the cat. Richard was still shocked at what Gavin had just done. "Do you want to call her or should I?" Gavin asked, feeling awkward. That's one feeling he doesn't like having now. "I'll call her." Richard said, hesitantly grabbing his phone and the poster. He dialed the number, calling the girl. Gavin waited, petting the cat, the cat warming up to Gavin more. It seemed used to androids, making Gavin wonder if the girl had an android at home. After Richard hung up and they returned the cat, they continued their patrol. "I won't be letting the "Gav" thing go, by the way." Gavin said. "Fuck you." Richard responded, causing Gavin to chuckle. "You're an asshole, you know?" Richard spoke. "I know." Gavin responded. " I still can't believe you deviated Hank. Why would you do that anyway? What was the reason? His job is literally to hunt deviants, and now he is one!" Richard started to rant. Gavin stopped in his tracks once he noticed something. "Detective." He said, trying to get him to stay quiet. Richard continued his rant. "Richard!" Gavin whisper-yelled, catching Richard off guard. Richard looked at him confused. Gavin motioned to some guy sneaking out of an alleyway. Richard was getting ready to go after him until Gavin stopped him. "No, don't." He said. Richard looked at him, confused. "Why?" He asked. "I have everything memorized. Let's go tell the station and then we can corner him all together. That'll make it harder for him to escape." Gavin explained. Richard looked back at the guy before sighing. "Fine." He agreed. "Let's go back to the station." Gavin said, starting to walk back to the station. Richard watched the guy for a moment before following Gavin back to the PD.
