Almost immediately after I walked out of the stall Grayson and Asher walked in the bathroom. Concern written all over their faces, but as soon as they saw me it was replaced with relief.
"Are you okay?" Grayson asked, immediately walking over to me and gripping my arms tightly.
"Yeah it's been like 30 minutes dude." Asher said nervously.
30 minutes? Had it really been that long?
"Yeah I'm fine." I said pulling away from Grayson's grip and quickly washing my hands.
"Are you sure? Because you look pale. Doesn't he look pale?" Asher questioned.
Grayson nodded. "He's definitely pale. Is it the chemo? Did you throw up again?"
"I had a panic attack." I said bluntly while grabbing some paper towels. Both their eyes went wide as they looked at me in horror."But I FaceTimed Cole and he helped me through it which is why I'm fine." I finished calmly.
They looked slightly relived, but a look of concern passed over Grayson's face again. He opened his mouth to say something, but then closed it for a second before opening it and then closing it again.
"Come on Grayson just spit it out man." I said, feeling slightly annoyed.
He took a deep breath before finally asking, "Are you still going to play tonight?"
"Yeah." I said without hesitation.
Him and Asher exchanged worried glances.
"What?" I asked annoyed.
"Well, it's just uh maybe you should take tonight off. You're on chemo and you just had a full blown panic attack. I mean it might be better if you— if you just took a break and got some rest tonight. You know?" Asher said quietly, as he played with the sleeve of his shirt.
I sighed, "Guys I know you're worried about me, but I've played multiple times before on chemo and after having panic attacks. I'll be fine. Don't worry. I know my limits and if it gets to be too much I'll stop. Okay?"
They shared another look before nodding.
Grayson shifted awkwardly on his feet, looking down at the ground for a few seconds before finally bring his gaze up to meet mine. "We're not trying to be annoying we're just worried about you." He said, emotion seeping into his voice.
I smiled. "I know, but you've got to trust me and let me do what I think is right for my body." I replied softly.
"We know that and we'll try to back off a bit." Asher said, a guilty look evident in his brown irises.
My smile grew as I pulled them both into a hug. "Thanks. I love you guys." I said holding onto them tightly.
"We love you too." Grayson replied.
I know, I know I'm being really sappy right now, but when you have cancer you have to enjoy every moment and let people know how much they mean to you whenever you can because you don't know what's going to happen. Not to be a downer or anything, but it could be the last time you see them and get to tell them how much you love them.
Actually this applies to all people whether you have cancer or not. None of us know what's going to happen. Take my parents for example. One night they were kissing me and my sibling and telling us that they would be back soon, and a few hours later they were dead. It just shows you how quickly someone's life can be ripped away from them, and how you should never take any moments for granted big or small.
Eventually we pulled away from the each other. Having enough of all the sappy, emotional stuff for one day. It was quiet for a few moments, but not the uncomfortable kind. More like a calm and peaceful kind of quite. The kind that you enjoyed and wished would last longer, but of course Asher, being Asher, broke the peace and quite.
