"No, you are not wearing that."
"Why not?" I asked, turning around to face Grayson.
It had almost been 2 weeks since my talk with Lindsay. After we got back to Starbucks we had split ways, both still excited about our potential date. It wasn't until I got home that I realized we hadn't set up an actual day for the date, or talked about what we were going to do. So, two missed calls and an awkward conversation later, we had decided to go to the movies.
It was now Saturday night, or as Grayson kept saying, date night. Once Grayson had heard that I had finally asked Lindsay out he had insisted on helping me get ready, because apparently he was an expert at these kind of things now that he had a girlfriend. You know the girlfriend that it took him a whole year to ask out?
"You look too formal." Grayson said, giving me a quick look up and down.
"It's a date. Isn't the point to look more dressed up?" I asked, turning around and looking at my reflection in the mirror.
I was wearing a light blue button up with tiny, dark blue triangles on it. It was rolled up to my elbows making it look slightly less formal in my opinion. I had paired it with khaki shorts, and my vans. I thought I looked pretty sharp, but Grayson thought otherwise.
"Yes, you should look formal, but not too formal." he replied, squinting at me as he continued to study my outfit.
I rolled my eyes at him. "What is that supposed to mean?" I asked, completely lost.
He let out an exasperated sigh, "It means you want to make a good first impression and look nice, but you also want to look casual."
I looked down at my outfit. "But this is dressy/casual." I said, in which he gave me a look and I added, "For me."
He opened his mouth to argue, but before he could there was a knock on my bedroom door.
"Come in." I yelled, taking a seat on my desk chair, all the talk about fashion exhausting me.
The door opened, revealing Sophi. A smile immediately appeared on her face when she saw me. "Oh my goodness! Don't you look nice." she said, walking over to me. "Get up. Do a spin." she ordered.
I rolled my eyes at my older sister, but did as she said, slowly standing up and doing a quick 360.
"Aw you look so cute!" Sophi squealed. "I can't believe my baby brother is going on a date!" she exclaimed, ruffling my hair.
"Stop that." I said, taking a step back and pushing her away playfully.
"I still think you need to change." Grayson said, eyeing me with a look of concentration.
"Why? What's wrong with what he's wearing?" Sophi asked, her eyebrows furrowing as she looked between my outfit and Grayson, obviously not seeing what the problem was either.
Grayson looked at my sister like she had grown two heads. "He looks way too nice. Like he should be going to get family pictures or something. Definitely not date material."
I crossed my arms over my chest, scowling at him. "Hey, I am totally date material. You're just jealous because I look better than you did on your first date with Sara." I retorted, remembering the gray athletic shorts and blue t-shirt Grayson had worn on his first date with Sara. Now that is definitely not date material.
He put his hand on his chest, gasping dramatically. "How dare you insult me like that!" he exclaimed in mock hurt. "And for the record I looked great on my date, but that is far from the point." he said, waving his hand dismissively. "I'm just trying to make sure you don't make a fool out of yourself on your first date with the love of your life, Lindsay."
