We had just sat down at Chick-fil-a, after we finished ordering, when suddenly I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I shifted my weight to the left, fishing my phone out of my back pocket, and quickly looking to see who it was.
To my surprise it was Lindsay.
Lindsay
Hey, can we talk after school?Me
Hey. Yeah, sure. Where?I chewed on my bottom lip nervously as I waited for her to respond.
Lindsay
How about Starbucks?Me
Sounds good to me. I just need to ask Matthew really quick.Lindsay
Okay, does 6:15 work?I read her message before turning to Matthew, who was also on his phone. "Matthew, can I go to Starbucks at 6:15 with Lindsay tonight?" I asked, slightly worried that he would say no.
He looked up from his phone, raising his brows slightly, "Just the two of you?"
"Uh, yeah. Is that okay?" I asked.
"Is this a date?" He smirked, his eyes glinting with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher.
"What? No!" I said, my heart pounding just at his proposal.
"Mhm, sure." He said, clearly unconvinced.
I rolled my eyes, "I'm serious, it is not a date."
He pursed his lips together, his eyes narrowing slightly, "Okay, then tell me this. Why are you two just going alone, with none of your other friends?"
I sighed. Honestly, I really didn't want to tell him about me and Lindsay's fight. I mean it was bad enough that all our friends plus Kate, John, and Sophi already knew. He would just be one more person to add to the ever growing list of people.
Unfortunately, I knew that the only way to get him off my back was to tell him the truth. So I decided to bite the bullet and get it over with.
"We had a fight." I replied, my voice coming out at a monotone.
His eyes widened in surprise, "What?" He asked, his expression remarkably close to the one Sophi had worn when she had found out, "What happened?"
"Uh, it's nothing to worry about." I said waving him off. "Nothing a cup of coffee and a chat won't fix." I said, trying to smile but it came out as more of a grimace instead.
Matthew eyed me carefully, clearly picking up on the fact I wasn't telling him everything. "Nolan?" He said, giving me a hard look that screamed: Tell me what's going on.
I closed my eyes, breathing in deeply through my nose, "I don't want to talk about it." I said into the darkness of my closed lids.
I heard Matthew sigh and shift in his seat before he said, "Okay."
His answer astonished me. I peeled my eyes open, searching his face. I was surprised to find that it was filled with sincerity.
"Really?" I asked, unable to mask my surprise at the fact be wasn't pushing me to tell him.
He shrugged, "Yeah, it's your business. I don't want to make you tell me something that you're not ready to share yet. Just promise me one thing." He said, I nodded almost instantly. "Promise, that if things get out of hand or you need help you will tell me."
"Yeah, of course. I promise." I assured him, glad that he was being so understanding.
I picked my phone back up quickly typing Lindsay back.
