HARMONY PAYNE sat next to her best friend, Kiesha McCalla, in their 'Ethics and Jurnoulism' class led by, Professor Amara Patterson. "It's just like in any other space. As black journalists, you will be held to a higher standard." Amara explained. A smile appeared on Harmony's face as she watched Spencer, Simone, Olivia, Jordan, and her sister, Lyric, slip into the classroom.
"There's a larger, unrealistic burden on black journalists. And if you take someone like me, who lies in the intersection of journalism and activism, that burden is even greater." Professor Patterson continued. "Keisha?" She called on her student, who had their hand raised. "So how can you maintain journalistic objectivity?" Kiesha asked. "The same way white reporters do." Someone in that back replied.
"Except, do they?" Harmony chimed in. "Just because the views of whiteness are normalized to be the objective neutral doesn't mean that they actually are." She argued, earning a high-five from Kiesha. "All right. Forget about journalistic objectivity, Keisha and Harmony." Amara interjected. "I instead believe in being ethical, fair, and telling the truth. There's a difference." She continued.
"And as for ethics, my philosophy is if it doesn't cross your line in the sand, there is no shame in walking away. But if it does, you pursue it until you have it right, and then bring it all to the light." Professor Patterson concluded. "Ok. Yas, poetry!" Keisha exclaimed, making the class erupt in laughter and snaps. "All right. See you all Tuesday." Amara dismissed. "Keisha, you're a mess." She joked as Harmony nudged her friend.
"Hootie hoo!" Simone called out as she ran to her aunt, "Hootie hoo!" Amara responded, embracing her niece with a hug. "Hi, auntie" Simone greeted. "Oh, my baby girl." She replied. "I can't believe you're really here," Harmony exclaimed as she hugged her sister. "I know." Lyric squealed. "Obviously this is little Harm," Amara pointed at Lyric, making the two sisters smile. "Olivia," She continued to guess, going down the line. "Which makes you Spencer."
"And you must be nephew-in-law." Amara stopped on Jordan, "Something like that." Jordan grinned."Uh, by the way, thank you so much for letting us stay this weekend, Ms. Patterson." He thanked. "Dear God. Call me Amara. I am not that old." She insisted, causing the group to laugh.
"So what you got going on?" Simone asked her aunt, "What do you mean? Teaching." Amara replied with confusion, "You are never just teaching. I know you got some amazing article brewing somewhere up in there," Simone pressed. "I'm still putting the pieces together." Ms. Patterson admitted. "In the meantime, it's homecoming." She exclaimed. "Yeah, y'all seem to take that real serious out here." Spencer voiced. "Oh, honey, you have no idea." Harmony spoke out while linking her arm with her best friend's.
