We were out to lunch at our favorite diner with Paris sitting in the high chair in between us. I couldn't believe she was already six months old. "There's something I wanted to talk to you about" I tell him as I steal some of his fries.
"Is it how you're going to start ordering your own fries so you'll stop stealing mine?" He asks with a smirk.
"Ha ha. No. I was thinking about calling Mike and seeing what I had to do to get the ball rolling on adopting Paris, provided that's still something you want me to do."
A big smile graces his face. "That sounds great! Doesn't it Paris? Should Mama adopt you?" I giggle as Paris starts screeching, banging her little fists on the table repeating Mama over and over again
"Ok. I'll call him tomorrow."
...
I was sitting in Mike's office once again, except this time there were no nerves. "So the process is fairly painless since you're married to the biological father, who has sole custody. It's mostly filling out the proper paperwork and then appearing in front of a judge. He or she will then sign off and the state will issue a new birth certificate with the new information on it." I nod in understanding. "Before you sign, I need to ask, are you sure you want to do this?" He asks.
"Are you asking as my lawyer or a family friend?"
"As your friend. I've already given you my professional opinion on the matter."
"Yes I want to do this. She's pretty much my daughter anyway. Ransom and I talked and we both think this is the best course of action."
"Ok, as long as you're sure." he says before passing me a stack of papers with little tabs on all the pages that I have to sign. It takes the better part of the morning to get through it all but by lunch time everything is ready to file.
Mike walks me out. "I'll get this filed with the court this afternoon and let you know as soon as I do when we have a date for the hearing with the judge, or if we need anything else before that."
"Thanks Mike." I say, giving him a hug before leaving.
...
"So how'd it go with Mike today?" Ransom asks from his spot in the kitchen where he's sitting in front of Paris, feeding her dinner.
"It went great. We got everything situated and he said he was going to file it with the court this afternoon." I say, placing a kiss on his cheek. "What's for dinner tonight for the princess?" I ask, placing a kiss on her head.
"Mixed vegetables." He says before showing me.
"Gross," we both say at the same time.
"But she seems to like it so I'd call this one a success." Ransom says with a triumphant smile on his face.
"I think she'll just eat anything that you put in front of her. She's a daddy's girl after all."
"So what happens next?" Ransom asks me later that night after putting Paris to bed.
"He files the paperwork with the court and then a hearing will be scheduled."
"So this is really happening?" He asks.
"It is. I told you I wanted to adopt her, it was just about getting there at the right time." He smiles at me and we snuggle up on the couch and just enjoy each other and the silence.
