IT WAS A DIFFERENT FEELING COMPARED TO THE COLD SAND. Maeve gasped trying to dig her way out. Feeling the dirt enters her lungs she screamed. Punching through it her hand reached through.
She clawed out holding her breath for as lo mg as she could. Once the dirt was loosened enough she jumped up. Sitting down in a field of nothing but grass. The dirt made its way back up.
Maeve leaned forward spitting up everything. Crying as she felt it scratch at the back of her throat. Only stopping after a few minutes of coughing.
Slowly she got up, wobbling her way through the trees. Faintly she could hear the stream of water somewhere further. Her legs guided her further into the forest along the way.
She was confused and scared. There was no saying where she was or how she got there. But the only thing she could focus on was the burn in the back of her throat.
The river wasn't far up ahead so she pushed off the nearest tree and rushed over. Throwing herself on the ground. She leaned over cupping the water.
Taking a small gulp at first, hoping to wash out any of the dirt still left. Finally cleaning off all traces of dirt from her skin. Maeve looked down at her shaking hands, her fingers were raw. Dirt was lodged underneath her nails but trying to scoop it out would only hurt.
She hadn't even noticed how torn they were from bleeding.
Maeve threw herself down and closed her eyes. There was no telling how long she was there or when the last time she had felt the sun was. Maeve laughed and covered her face with her hands.
Trying to think about how she managed to get back or why wasn't something she worried about right now. Even if she tried to make sense of it all, she would never know why.
Maeve had already decided to not question any of it and go on pretending like she magically earned another shot at living.
While it was the partial truth, Ymir had given her a second chance.
It was Ymir's greatest gift to Maeve, something that Ymir wished Cecil and herself had gotten. Maeve lay on the soft grass listening to the flowing river for what felt like forever.
She sat back up, getting ready to leave. There was no telling where she was or where she should go. Especially when night fell, she needed somewhere safe and the woods was not it. Maeve got up slowly and continued to walk straight.
The only thing she knew was that it was still early in the day, and the position of the sun in the sky worked like a clock.
As she walked, she stood relatively close to the stream. Not having any resources to carry water so her only option was the river next to her. She walked for hours, aimlessly.
