MONDAY

AUGUST 30TH

The morning of September 1st has meant many things to me throughout my life, when I was a child I remember waking up to the smell of pancakes and laughter flowing through the walls of our small home. Pancakes always meant it was the first day of school.

Until suddenly I was 15, and September 1st turned into the worst day of my life.

The smell of pancakes mixed in with my fathers blood splattered along the kitchen wall, next to his dead body lay my mother, she was always fair skinned even when she would spend her afternoons gardening, the sun always left her pink rather than golden. She lay on the kitchen floor in a pool of her own blood, throat slashed, ghostly white.

Now I stand alone with my entire life packed into 2 suitcases and my backpack, waiting to board my flight to take me somewhere hopefully the nightmares won't be able to reach. London, England.

When I first told my best friend Rebekah that I planned to quit my desk job and move across the world to become a live-in nanny she wasn't thrilled, but the ad had already been posted and I'd accepted a job.

"You're looking at the newest Au Pair for the Greyson family." I announced walking into our shared apartment in Austin, well more like her apartment that I crashed at in return for paying for groceries.

"Are you serious? Tay you've only just posted the ad yesterday, at least view your options before settling on the first family who shows interest." Rebekah stated in an obviously bored tone. She was sitting at her desk, her long brown hair pulled into a low pony-tail, sighing I walked over and swiveled her chair to face me.

"If you're going to pretend to scold me as a way to let out your jealousy, at least look me in the eyes." I crossed my arms and gave her a challenging look. "I've talked to 4 families and really like this one, it's two girls, 2 and 4. The fathers a professor at Oxford which is only an hour from London's city center and the mother is a teacher at the local school. We chatted over the phone and they bought me a flight for Wednesday."

I could see her looking at the computer for the date and groaned. "This Wednesday? As in 2 days away Taylor? Are you mental? You can't even pack in that time much less figure out how you plan to move across the fucking world?" Rebekah practically yelled at me, she rose from her seat and started to pace.

"We both know I can be packed in an hour, and I've already sorted all of that out. Turns out I'm a dual citizen Rebs, I can up and leave the country no issue." I try to joke, noticing the tension in the room has started to rise.

"It's not like I'm leaving anything behind but you." I deadpan, "and you could always come with."

Rebekah sighs and sits down in defeat. "I'll visit you first chance I get. Just don't get yourself killed."
