________
After two reasonably successful race weekends in Austin and Miami, I find myself in a hotel lobby in Brazil in November.
The showdown between the title contenders is getting closer and closer. Daniel has picked up a few more points than Verstappen in the last two races, leaving them just 10 points apart.
Right behind him has crept Lewis Hamilton, who has made up for some things after the summer break that didn't work out so well before. Much to the chagrin of George, who is now significantly further behind Lando, Carlos and Checo. Nevertheless, the first eight drivers are closer together than they have been for a long time.
The excitement that Daniel, and thus McLaren, could win a world championship title ensures that everyone involved jumps from one interview to the next. We haven't been able to eat in peace or even celebrate for ages - but that should change this weekend. It's Lando's 23rd birthday, and a few of his friends are coming over as a surprise.
As I go through the list on Wednesday to sort out the hotel room allocation, Nathalie comes up to me.
"Say, do you know those two?" She points to two dark-haired young girls standing at the reception.
I look up, confused. "Huh?"
"Those two. They look familiar, but I don't know why." Nathalie shrugs.
I follow her gaze unobtrusively and spot the two she is talking about. The colour drains from my face. "Oh no."
"You know them, too?" Nathalie looks at me questioningly.
"They're the two girls Lando and Forkie hang out with. I didn't know they were coming too," I murmur softly.
I pull out my mobile to text Max.
"What are the Portuguese girls doing here?"
"I promised they could come. It's not a problem, is it?"
I put my head back. "You take care of them. One bout of misbehaviour, and they fly back."
"Yes, boss. But does that mean they're here?"
I don't answer anymore. Instead, I wonder more and more about young men's hormones.
"I can't remember the last time in my life I've been so done with everything." Daniel lies on the bed with his eyes closed.
"I'm sorry, but you have to get up. We have to go." I pull him up by his hands.
He looks me up and down. "You sure we can't just stay here?"
I smooth down the black cocktail dress I'm wearing.
"Right, what if we both happen to miss the team dinner where you get high praise." I shake my head. "I'm sure no one will find it conspicuous."
He pulls me towards him by my waist. "Is there a reward?"
I grin at him. "Apart from the championship title?"
He groans and runs his hand through his curls. "Okay, okay. Worth it."
