CAL HOCKLEY REALIZED HIS MISTAKE as soon as Josephine jumped off that ship. For a few moments, he had believed that all was going his way; he had gotten Rose and her mother on a lifeboat, and now Josephine had gotten on one as well - to make matters better, he was about to finally get rid of Jack, who had been a torn on his backside from the moment they met.
But as Josephine jumped back onto the ship, her motives purely fueled by passion and devotion, all of Cal's joy slipped away. He considered simply leaving it be and later informing Rose of a tragic story of how her beloved cousin had perished despite his attempts to save her. But when his hand slipped into his coat pocket, his face fell.
Previously in the evening, he had slipped the Heart of the Ocean into his large coat as a guarantee. But he had temporarily forgotten about that fact, simply assuming it was in his suit pocket - but it wasn't. Alas, he had placed the valuable necklace into the very coat that now resided atop Josephine's shoulders.
He ignored Lovejoy's calls for him as he quickly followed behind Jack, taking him over to the grand staircase, where he watched the couple tearfully embrace themselves with spite in his eyes. Truth be told, he felt stuck in a daze, not quite knowing what to do about his current predicament. After all he'd done, it wasn't as if he could just stroll up to Jack and Josephine and demand they give him the necklace, which they weren't even aware of, to begin with.
Lovejoy grabbed his arm slowly, dragging him away from the scene which the valet guessed only upset Cal due to his honor and constant demand to win at everything; sure, that was one of the reasons, but the precious diamond hidden on the coat which the very two people he seemed to despise the most were in possession of made him go insane.
So insane, that he grabbed the handgun that was hidden in Lovejoy's coat and quickly sprinted towards the couple. Anyone around could see the crazed look in Caledon Hockley's eyes - a man who until that evening, most everyone believed to be a perfect gentleman.
A gunshot rang out through the air, interrupting the sweet embrace that Josephine and Jack found themselves in. The latter was the first to notice the weapon in Cal's hand, and before the gun even sounded, he had pulled Josephine away - and just in time too, for the bullet would have hit her had they not moved.
