"everyone look out! the scout regiment is back!" a man in the crowd says, "that's right commander erwin!"
we stand along with the crowd of civilians in the trost district as we watch the scout regiment ride through slowly on horseback. they've just completed a mission beyond the walls. i look at them with starstruck eyes the way a toddler looks at a piece of candy.
"look! it's captain levi!" another person in the crowd says. we watch as a man with short black hair rides through with an unimpressed expression on his face, but the woman next to him with glasses on seems happily pleased.
"feel how excited everybody is?" eren says, "it's like the crowd just has a different energy now".
"well we are going on five years without incident" hanna says from behind us. she stands a few inches taller than me and has short red hair pulled into a low ponytail, "seems like a good omen".
"and you should check out all the canon upgrades. the sight alone 'ought to be enough to scare 'em off" franz says from next to the ginger. he's much taller than the rest of us and has a buzz cut like connie.
"that's the truth" hanna smiles back.
"you in denial 'cause you're a couple? what's that about?" eren suddenly lashes out.
"woah, woah, woah, this isn't what it looks like okay?" hanna says as her cheeks flash a bright red and she turns away.
"knock it off, man. it's embarrassing!" franz adds while he buries his also flustered face in his hands.
"hey, hey. lookie here" we hear a familiar voice call out. we turn our heads to see hannes walk over to us with a smile across his face.
"mr. hannes!" eren says.
"word on the street's they let you graduate yesterday. either the four of you've grown up or standards have plummeted" hannes states.
"oh yeah? like you're one to talk. the corps of engineers keep their new chief in the drink?" eren rebuttals.
"watch it" hannes says as he flicks eren's forehead as if to scold him, "i'm sorry if this is out of the blue. but i want you to know your mother's death still haunts me".
"me too. but it wasn't your fault" eren starts, "we were shooting in the dark then. but nothing like that's going to happen again. we know what we're dealing with now". suddenly, a bell rings to let us know that we're needed on top of the walls and we all run to the top before we're greeted with some unexpected faces.
"what? what the hell do you mean you're joining the scouts?" eren says as he plunges a canon.
"don't worry about it! a guy's allowed to change his mind, okay" connie responds as he shines the cannon beside eren.
"i think your speech yesterday lit a fire under him" mina says, referring to the speech eren gave during the celebration.
"ain't nobody talking to you!" connie responds, "his temper tantrum had nothing to do with it".
"take it easy" thomas says as he walks over to join the conversation, "it's not like you're the only one".
"what? are you serious?" eren asks.
"can you guys keep a secret?" sasha says as she runs over to the group. "cause i totally just helped myself to the officer's pantry".
"sasha! you're going to get in trouble for that!" eren says.
"seriously, what's wrong with you" thomas says.
"what isn't wrong with her" connie jokes.
"it'll be fine. i'm willing to share" sasha says with a blissful expression.
"put it back!" connie yells.
"yeah! do you have any idea how rare meat's been since the titans took wall maria?" mina says, pointing out the obvious.
"um, a little bit, yah" sasha replies sarcastically.
"count me in" i say confidently, "and at least if we get in trouble, we won't be hungry".
"i would really like a slice please!" samuel admits.
"hey, if they get some so do i! just so you know" connie adds.
"me too! i'm in on it" mina says.
"but..." eren starts.
"you're always such a rule follower. let loose a little eren" i say as i nudge his arm with my elbow.
"come on! don't just stand there" samuel says, "if they see us slacking off, we're in for it".
"see you guys at lunch time" mina waves goodbye before the rest of us return to our posts. i crouch down next to my assigned canon and begin to clean it when suddenly there's a loud crash and a flash of light. my head immediately jerks to the side as i see a large head made of exposed muscles and teeth; and it's none other than the colossal titan.
the world feels as though it's stopped turning and we all stand still in shock before a powerful gust of hot steam blows and another crash is heard from underneath us. i'm sent flying back from the pressure of the steam and use my odm gear to attach myself back onto the wall so i don't fall.
"that was too damn close" eren says under his breath. as the smoke clears, it's obvious that the loud crash from underneath us was a hole being made in the wall just big enough for titans to walk through.
"oh god no, not again" i say with my eyes wide. memories flash in front of my eyes of the last time i was in this situation just five years ago. i had lost everything. my family, my house, my belongings. all of it.
"they're going to get in. they're going to get in. they're going to get in!" connie panics. i stare at the ground, unknowing of what i should do.
"this is it, people! do or die!" eren yells before taking out his blades, "mounted cannon squad four, take out the colossal titan! this is our chance! don't let it slip away!". he suddenly goes flying through the air onto the top of the wall.
he's right. what am i doing? this is my chance to take it back; my chance to get revenge. i know what i have to do.
