Probably Better Apart

"Hey Miss Zamo! Katya, wait please!" The girl from the meeting yells after me as I make my way out of the building.

"What is it?"

"Well firstly, hi I'm Courtney, Trixie's manager. You got to the point so fast in the meeting that we didn't even have time to introduce ourselves. Secondly, I need you to work with Trixie, whatever it takes."

"It was nice to meet you Courtney, but I meant what I said. I get that you want me to work with her, but I just can't." I tell her.

"Why not? Did you two date or something? Is that what this is about?"

"No, no it's not that. But we did go to school together, we were in the same class. And well... Trixie just doesn't like me very much. We have completely opposite views of the world and about how art is made, at least we did, and based on what I've seen since I don't believe that it has changed much. I can't trust that Trixie will listen to my opinions or respect my art, so I can't work with her. I always demand the right to pull out of a project or deny the use of my artwork if I feel like I'm compromising my artistic voice, and I fear that taking on this project will result in that."

"I get it, I do. You're looking out for yourself and you're looking out for her by not agreeing to something you don't think will be productive for either of you. But here's the thing; Trixie needs you. Listen, when we first signed her, she had enough songs ready to fill up an album with the sound the label wanted her to have. But the next one took ages, she needed other writers to come in and assist her to get it finished which made production more expensive, and it didn't perform as well. Now, she's released singles and it's kept management off our backs for a while, but they want another full album and she just doesn't have it. She's stuck and people are loosing interest in her, so unless we can find a way to push her in a new direction artistically the company will find people to write the songs they want for her and they will probably force her to do music and concepts that she isn't comfortable with. I don't want that to happen, and to prevent from happening I believe we need someone like you, someone with a completely different artistic voice. I had to go through hell to even get them to consider giving us more time and bringing you in, so please help her. I know you probably don't care much about her, but if there's even a slight part of you that does then please join the team and help me get her writing again, 'cause it is the only way I can save her from becoming a complete puppet for the label." Courtney says, with more passion then most would have for their job, and what seems like genuine care for Trixie's well-being.

I consider her words carefully, and as stubborn as I would like to be about it, I can't help but give in. As difficult as Trixie can be, she's still the girl I fell madly in love with at age fourteen. I can't let her end up like a company puppet and let others write for her, not when I know firsthand that there are amazing songs that she's never released.

"Fine, I'll do it. But you have to inform Trixie of my demands, and she has to agree to work with me and be informed of who I am." I tell her.

"Deal. Thank you so much! You are a lifesaver. I have to run back upstairs and inform my bosses that you've accepted before they start hiring people to write for Trixie, but could you come by the studio tomorrow morning? I think we need to get started as soon as possible, so I'll talk to Trixie tonight and then we can get to work in the morning."

"Sure, what time?" I ask.

"Eleven? I can come down here and meet you five minutes before?" She suggests.

"Okay, that works, just make sure you do get Trixie to agree before the meeting."

"Will do, she might still not be thrilled about it, but I promise I'll cancel right away if she outright refuses." Courtney assures me.

I nearly laugh, knowing fully well that unless Trixie has completely flipped the switch since high school, there's no way she'll be happy about working with me. Just getting her to accept at all would honestly be unbelievable, and I'm sure Courtney is in for one hell of a fight. But I nod my head in agreement, and reply;

"That works."
