"Even the very wise cannot see all ends . . ."

Before I had a chance to open my mouth, a familiar ringing filled my ear, and Zhan glanced down at his pocket, fishing out his phone.
The light of his phone flashed brightly, illuminating a glow as Zhan gave it only one mere glance, the light in his eyes immediately extinguishing as a scowl made a place for his usual bantering smile.
"I am sorry, I have to leave you now, little lion cub, but will you be attending tonight's gala?" His words pierced through my heart as I pushed away the uneasy feeling making it master inside me.
I shook my head; all I had planned for tonight was to jump into my blankets and cry.
"Since you haven't given me your name, instead, let me have a dance tonight at the gala with you; after that, you can leave, hm?" Zhan smiled softly, the warmth radiating from his smile and filling me.
"Do I even have a choice?" I muttered as Zhan threw his head back with a laugh.
"I guess you don't; see you tonight, little fiercy lion," Zhan said, taking my hand to place a feather-light kiss on it before standing up.
"I will leave the door open for you to go." And with that, Zhan was gone.
The question as to how he got the key came hours later.
At that moment, I looked around the room, the candle still burning, but the little ghost boy was nowhere to get seen.
I rubbed my eyes before slowly standing up, walking with a little bit of difficulty towards the candle, and standing before it, I stared at it, the flame now burning strong.
Leaning forwards, I blew a bit of wind as the tiny blazing flame extinguished, my vision being enveloped into darkness again, a shiver running down my spine as I told myself I was not locked.
Zhan had given me the key to my cage.
Standing upright, I walked through the darkness, my hands in front of me, trying to be sure I wouldn't bump into anything when I suddenly felt a freezing breeze pass my shoulder.
I quickened my steps as I threw the door open, my body half stumbling out into the hallway as I fell onto the ground, just able to avoid the wound on my knee, my eyes adjusting to the bright light as I glanced into the darkroom. And for a second, I swore to have seen a shadowy figure retreating.
My hands trembled as I stood up, running through the empty hallway, the image of the darkness in the back of my mind.
As I ran, dragging my other leg because of the wound, my eyesight was blurred, and at some point, my shoulder bumped against someone else; I looked up into a pair of cold brown eyes of a male who was slightly taller than me but seemingly younger.
I looked him up and down, his long black coat and glasses on the bridge of his nose revealing nothing about whether he was human or not; he let out a slight sigh as I apologized, quickly passing him.
For some inexplicable reason, I felt like I had seen that man before, but I couldn't put my finger on it, so I tried to shrug it off my shoulders.
I didn't know how fast I had to run into the closure of my room where the windows got opened, fresh air poured in, and the bright light was shining.
I hated darkness, I wasn't afraid of it, but I just hated the creeping feelings it gave me.
Whenever it was dark, I could feel a presence I would ignore when I could see, and that was also why I hated darkness because I was weak to it.
