I woke up and rolled on my back. I had a massive headache, and I don't remember why. I rolled over to the nightstand to see a glass of water and my dress. That's when I remembered I wasn't in my house. I rolled over on my other side to see a girl with black hair laying on her side. Honestly, in my mind, I was thinking 'did I seriously just hook up with someone?!' but then I remembered very faintly. That's Billie, and no, we didn't hook up. Her eyes opened and met mine, she smiled a little.
"How are you feeling?" She asked.
"I have a headache. But that's it I think." I rubbed my temples and closed my eyes.
The weight on the bed shifted again and I was alone.
"Do you want breakfast? I don't think anyone else is awake yet, actually, Finneas, Claudia, and Finn went out for breakfast and left us behind. It's just you and me."
"Oh, okay. I'll help you make breakfast." I made it all the way up to my elbows before my head started pounding even harder. "Fuck."
"Yeah, you were drunk as hell. You called me beautiful." She laughed. "Do you need help?"
"Yeah. That would be nice."
She held my hand and helped me out of bed.
When we walked down the stairs I almost fell. Billie grabbed my hand. At the end of the staircase, I let go and plopped down on a seat in the kitchen.
"Are you vegan?" She asked me.
"Vegetarian, can we just go grab something? I don't feel like waiting. I will pay."
"Yeah. Let me go grab my keys."
She jogged out of the room. I looked around at the nice ass kitchen in front of me. It was sparkling, literally. The sun hit all of the counters and pictures just right.
She walked back jangling her keys. "You ready?"
"Shit, no. I don't have shoes."
Billie snickered. "Just put on Claudia's flipflops."
"Okay..." I slipped them on and we walked out the door.
The whole car ride was silent until we got to taco bell.
"What do you want?" She asked me.
"Two bean and cheese burritos."
"Hi! Welcome to Taco Bell, what would you like?"
"Hey, can I get 4 bean and cheese burritos please, without onions."
"4 bean and cheese burritos, no onions. Anything else?"
She looked over at me and I shook my head.
"No thanks."
"Okay! $7.45 at the next window."
We got our food and I gave her the directions to my apartment. I invited her to come and eat with me, I kinda knew she had nothing better to do.
"Sure, why not." She parked her car and got out.
I led her up to my apartment. We got inside and I set our food on the table. We sat down across from each other.
"Why do you only have two chairs?" She asked, looking around the room.
"Because Finn is my only friend."
"What about your family?"
I glanced up at her. If only she knew. At this moment, I was considering my options to respond to this question. Tell her the truth, or be an asshole about it. "What family?"
"Oh. My bad." She looked embarrassed. I shouldn't have chosen the asshole route.
"Sorry. They're all dead. And if they're not, they're across the world."
"I'm sorry. I hope you don't mind me asking, but what happened."
Now, I was not prepared for this at all. Not even Finn asked me this question before. Fuck it. "My mom shot my dad and siblings, then herself. I was hiding in the closet."
"Oh fuck, Y/n." She looked down at her food.
I shrugged. "I've moved on." I haven't.
"Can I hug you?" She hesitated. I did, too.
The last time I hugged someone was... I don't even remember. It's been at least 15 years, though. I looked her up and down, then stood up and grabbed a glass. "Do you want some water?"
"Yes, please." She looked up at me, I could see the guilt in her eyes.
I brought it over to her and sat next to her this time. Her hands were on the table and she wasn't touching her food.
"It's okay, Billie. I will hug you." I stood up and she stood up and pulled me in.
My whole body went tense. I felt almost all of her. I felt her heart beating, her slow breathing, her skin on my skin. I wrapped my arms around her and closed my eyes. Luckily, it was easy not to cry. But deep down, I knew I wanted to.
