Humming, I swam about the waters joyfully and glanced at the sea creatures, watching them enjoying their aquatic lives. My father, who always spoke about humans being a danger to our kind, had warned me about going out into open waters.
Another type of human called pirates sailed our waters and always let down their traps to capture not only the precious sealife living peacefully amongst us, but us mermaids as well. I didn't worry much, for I have always swam out here and returned home safely.
I decided to swim up towards the surface, and when I did, the sky was dark and there were bright lights in the sky. My mother says that they are called stars, these big balls of gas that create light and shine. There was also the moon. It was just as gorgeous as the stars.
Smacking my tail against the surface of the water, I jumped and swam back down into the deep ocean depths. I giggled and passed by more animals such as whales, sharks, and dolphins.
The dolphins circled me as they whistled and clicked. I played along and created the exact same noise they made. No matter how many times I did that, they were always surprised and impressed.
I waved goodbye to them as they swam off in the opposite direction. I continued swimming forwards and felt the water against my skin. I loved my home, the beautiful ocean.
A long and dark shadow blocked the moonlight, causing the curiosity within me to spike up.
"What the...?" I mumbled to myself, swimming upwards.
I poked half my head out of the water and made contact with a big ship. I remember my father telling me about these. Pirates sailed on these through our oceans, sometimes dumping their waste into our waters. I will admit though, the ship is beautiful at night with the moonlight shining upon it.
Slowly swimming beside it, I see a human look over the edge. Without hesitation, I duck back underneath the water, for I cannot let them see me.
I waited a little bit and swam to the other side of the ship. I poked my head out again and looked up. I could see the human's shadows as they danced and walked about. There was music playing and many voices cheering and laughing.
"Pirates..." I frowned angrily and crossed my arms.
I backed down into the waters again and began to swim away, however this black thing with small holes began to surround me. At first, I thought that it was another shadow, but as it curved around me and tied up into a knot above me, I quickly realized that it was a trap.
It was a net. That's what my father said that they were called.
I grabbed onto the ropes and tried ripping it apart, but I couldn't. They were too thick and strong.
