"Tiếp tục chạy!" Xuan shouted, coughing as the fire burned the land, letting out huge clouds of dark and heavy smoke. The raging bright but dangerous flames destroyed the crops, the food that we were supposed to grow for the Japanese Empire and his army. We protested, rebelled against him and chose our paths; we decided to run away and refuse to serve them. We weren't slaves, none of our people are and never will be! Many of our men sacrificed their lives to hold the Japanese back while the rest of us ran, but as strong as they were, the enemy got through them swiftly.
Holding my younger brother Hieu in my arms, I continued to sprint through the trees and bushes surrounding me and my fellow people. I could hear the sound of gunshots behind me, men and women screaming in pain as they were shot. I heard some of their bodies collapsing, then the sound of several gunshots in the area they fell. I dared not to look back, for I would rather not see a dead corpse; it would only slow me down and lead me to my death.
Hieu sobbed uncontrollably, clutching tightly onto my shirt as he buried his face into my chest. He curled up into a ball, begging to be protected, and that was what I did. I held him with a firm grip and sped up. I refused to let my brother die, and I promised my mother and father that I would live on for them and protect my brother no matter the cost.
Reaching the edge of the forest, I halted in my tracks as my eyes widened at the sight of an open field. Dead bodies lay across, some in piles. It seemed as if an execution had occurred, possibly some of my people who attempted to flee before we had started the fires on our now cursed land. I prevented Hieu from looking at the bodies, for he had already seen enough. I pulled him close to my chest, gently patting his head and planting a kiss on his forehead.
I continued to run out into the open field, seeing another forest off in the distance. Smiling, my feet and legs picked up energy and speed as my adrenaline circulated throughout my body at a quicker rate. I glanced behind me, my eyes making contact with only the trees, bushes, vines, and flowers. There was no sign of the Japanese soldiers, therefore I stopped running and decided to walk.
I was heading in the right direction. The Japanese have yet to take over the entirety of my country, so if I could somehow make it far enough up toward the land in the Northeast faster than the Japanese, I could take some time to rest a couple of days and plan stuff out before they made it across to me. It would only be me and my brother against dozens of soldiers, but we would make it work. I remember my parents showing me how to make several types of traps, so that knowledge would soon come in handy.
Now approaching the forest, I let out a sigh of relief and decided to take a short rest. I set a blanket down on the ground and sat down upon it, gently placing my little brother on my lap. He was asleep; dry tears could be seen on his face. I frowned and shook my head; I wish that he didn't have to live through this hell. This was too much for a child to go through. I could only hope that soon the Japanese would be wiped off our land and sent back to theirs. I remember overhearing a conversation, and apparently the Japanese were occupying our land and using us as a resource for food and other things for a war they were fighting against Great Britain and France. I also remember snapping and yelling at the soldiers since I had become angry at their conversation. I was almost shot, but I was saved by their leader, the Japanese Empire. He shot his own soldiers and politely asked me to keep working, and so I did. I had no idea why he did that, but I was grateful. For the rest of the time he remained in Vietnam before leaving back to his homeland, he would always watch me, stare at me with a love-struck type gaze. The day he left he had taken me out of work and had me clean his clothing, give him massages, and several other things that were rather uncomfortable. He had mumbled something under his breath as he made his way to his flying vehicle, but I did not manage to hear what he said.
