To your surprise, Heishe's advice of closing your eyes actually works. After a while of just listening to the sounds of the night – the quiet wind rustling in the leaves of the nearby forest, the calming splashing of the lake water against its embankment and the calls of the few animals awake – you feel yourself drifting into some form of trance-like state. Unlike during sleep, you're still very much aware of what is going on around you, but you don't jerk at every sound and everything seems to move into a far distance.
It's calming and very refreshing to not be overwhelmed by your extraordinary senses, and you enjoy the peace it brings you.

When you open your eyes again after what feels like half an hour or so, the forest and lake are still engulfed in darkness, but there's a thin line of gold at the horizon, separating the black treetops from the dark-blue night sky and announcing the new day.
You know that you can only see it because you are a demon, so you probably still have at least a few hours until the sun actually starts to rise.
Searching for Heishe, you look around and find that he's nowhere to be seen. The lake lies still and so does the forest, only accompanied by the usual sounds of nature.
After you've looked around once more, you decide to call for your familiar.

"Heishe?", you ask into the darkness.
Something awakens close by, though you cannot make out where exactly. But your demonic senses pick up some movement – a breath, a slow wriggle of a long body.
My Queen.
Heishe's voice resounds in your head, deep and languid. It echoes off the borders of your mind and immediately puts you at ease.
Are you alright?
The surface of the lake starts to tremble, tiny ripples forming and splashing against the embarkment as something stirs in the miry depths.
Of course.

The ripples on the lake increase as the dragon lifts from the water slowly. He hangs in the air lifelessly while he pulls himself from it, water running off his back, dripping from his mane and the fur at his tail as he raises into the air. Only when he finally stops does he open his eyes, the gold much more intense than before. In front of the bright shimmer at the horizon, to your demon eyes, it almost seems as if liquid gold is dripping from his ebon body.
My Queen, he repeats as the impact of his look rolls through your body, then he slowly approaches.

You get up, leaving Daimon behind, and step up to the lake. As Heishe comes close, you raise a hand and he presses his snout into its palm gently. His touch comes with a stream of cold water that flows from his body to yours, but you don't mind.
"Thanks for saving us", you say quietly. The dragon hums as a reply, sending the sound of his appreciation through your entire body while he leans into your hand even more. His eyes are narrowed which makes him look like a cat enjoying some pets.
No need to thank me. I did what was my duty, and gladly so.
"Still. If it hadn't been for you, I don't know what would've happened."
Something horrible, in one way or another.
"Probably." You sigh, rubbing your forehead when you think about what consequences your escape from the Ayabbi will have. Bad ones, probably. You twinge at the thought that a fight might be inevitable.
Let me take your mind off things, Heishe interjects. He must have felt your inner turmoil. As I recall, you had some questions. Let us go on a flight, and I will give you all the answers you desire.

"A flight?", you repeat, throwing a glance back towards Daimon who's still deep asleep under the tree. He hasn't moved and thick tears are still seeping from his closed eyes, but his breath is heavy and steady.
"We can't leave him behind unprotected."
"Then we will not", Heishe says out aloud and pulls back from your touch. You watch on as he moves a few meters back and shakes his head a few times.
A few of his shiny black scales fall from behind his neck spikes and tumble to the ground. There, they quickly merge to form a smaller version of the snake Heishe turned into earlier.
The snake makes its way towards Daimon. Upon reaching him, it moves up his front leg until it reaches his shoulders. Finally nestling in the soft curve between his shoulder blades, it rolls up and then opens its two sparkling golden eyes. After it has rested its chin on its curled-up body, the snake stops moving.
"I will leave that part of myself here", the dragon says after you've watched the spectacle with fascination. "It will protect Daimon, and alert me should something unusual happen. He will be safe."
You're not sure how that tiny snake is supposed to help, but since you cannot feel even a hint of insecurity or insincerity from Heishe, you decide to trust him. "Okay", you say and he lowers your head for you to jump onto his body. He didn't have to – you could've easily made the jump without him coming closer – but you appreciate the gesture.
