Faint, steady beeps consume the dense hospital air. Anastasia's heartbeat on the monitor beside her bed keeps me at ease as I try my hardest to pay attention to this important conversation—this conversation that will inevitably tear my soul to pieces.

"We'll have to wait it out for the next few weeks." A nurse is speaking to me, but I have no willpower to listen. I haven't stopped crying since I was revived and holding my wife in my arms. I haven't stopped having panic attacks every five minutes since we arrived back in Phantomridge. And, through it all, I haven't left my mate's side once.

On a couch against the wall to the left of me, Killian and Sterling sit quietly, doing their best to listen intently to what the woman has to say. Though Killian is supposed to be getting checked out for intensive injuries, he said he was fine enough to wait and be here to support me. He wanted to be here to support me.

"The pregnancy wasn't far along enough for us to need to do surgery. And the...the miscarriage was thankfully not life-threatening on your mate's part, Alpha," the nurse continues, struggling to comprehend this information, too.

I can see the way her hands tremble as she holds a binder full of Anastasia's medical files—everything they've had on record since my mate first came here as a human. The reaction is not because the nurse is scared, though, but because she's heartbroken and on edge. Not many know about what happened out there at the cabin yet—what we were so close to losing but thankfully didn't. All because of my wife.

It's been a few hours since we got back, but nothing feels the same. Nothing is as it once was before we left for Mylithia almost a week ago.

Xander is somewhere in this hospital with Serofina, both individuals getting checked out by a different set of doctors. Even after explaining the situation with having a rogue on pack grounds following the shit we just went through, Isaac was insistent on having warriors with the huntress at all times—with Maddox's spawn, as some of my warriors have titled her so far. No one trusts that her deceased father's tendencies aren't already embedded into her mind's wiring, ready to be triggered at a moment's notice. Not to mention, with what happened the last time she was within our walls... Everyone has the right to be on edge. Their emotions and reactions are valid.

I know Xander can handle any problems that come up, but I barely consider the female to be a threat anymore. If anything, she'd seemed relieved to not be under her father's order as soon as we got here. But at the same time, a solemn appearance masked much of her excitement. Perhaps uncertainty for what's to become of her purpose—how things will move forward. Her shock certainly comes with the death of her father—the only 'role model' she's had her entire life. I wanted to kill the woman for laying her hands on my wife in Mylithia, but...she showed a willingness to make an alliance after protecting us from the cabin's debris. The least I can do is give her a chance. Talk with her. Make amends, hopefully.

As I sit in a chair beside Anastasia's bed, unable to let go of her hand, I can only grip onto her cold fingers for hope. They'd tried convincing me I needed to be admitted, too. I'd died, after all. Reed even thought I was at risk of suffering from later consequences and complications if we did nothing, but I didn't let anyone touch me until I knew my mate was okay first.

There's an IV stuck in my arm now, though, all connected to a mobile drip bag. They ran a few tests on me after taking several ultrasounds and scans of Anastasia, finding I was in fact dehydrated and low on certain nutrients and enzymes; the Moonstone only did so much for me. And none of it included restoring any of the bonds with my pack or my wife, which is something we need to solve at a later time. But, as for my mate...
