You couldn't get home fast enough. Seeing that article had rattled you. You couldn't get the words out of your mind, the panic building in your chest so much that you felt like you were going to explode.
You didn't get a chance to talk to Donella anymore after the text. She'd responded, saying she'd keep her eyes peeled. But other than that, you hadn't heard anything more. It was still early, you had to admit. But still...Something about this unsettled you. Something about this made you keenly aware that Andy Barber was very close to reaching his breaking point.
When you got to your apartment, you were ready to lock yourself in and do everything you could to unwind. But being there only wound you up more.
Though you had moved out to Washington state for a decade, you kept your old apartment. It held a lot of memories for you, and you weren't ready to let it go. Not even after everything that had happened. It was home for you. You'd been through a lot there. It felt wrong to move elsewhere.
But now...Now it made you feel sick.
Especially when you saw the blinking light on your voicemail machine.
You felt ancient with your landline and voicemail machine, but it had brought you a sort of comfort to still have a home phone number. Even when you lived in Washington as cell phones became the norm, you couldn't live without your landline. It didn't quite feel like home without one.
Granted, it was a different number now. You made sure to have it changed before you left for Washington. You didn't have it listed in the phone book. You made sure Andy couldn't contact you.
And yet...
You pressed the play button.
"Hey sunshine," he said. "I don't know if you've heard, but a lot of bad things have been happening lately. M-My family's in some deep shit right now. And I've just been reflecting while I wait to post bail for Jake, but...I can't stop thinking about how none of this would've happened if it was me and you."
You sucked in a breath. The breaking point was closer than you thought.
"I really miss you. We should meet up sometime...Anyways, just give me a call when you get this, okay? I love you, sunshine."
Without even thinking, you grabbed the phone, ripping it from the wall, throwing it in the kitchen trash. Landlines were a thing of the past anyways. Who even needed them?
You should've known better, though. What Andy wanted, Andy would get. Still, you prayed it would be the last time he would contact you. That he would get the hint. That he would leave you be.
Oh, how wrong you were.
Andy drove like a mad man on his way to the doctor. His adrenaline was high. Sky high, through the roof high. He didn't even pause to give you the medicine to knock you out so you couldn't pay attention to the drive. Not that he would've given it to you if his adrenaline was low. Seeing you scream and write in pain scared the shit out of him. And he wasn't about to let anything hurt you or the baby.
